Property Taxes are Due
If you pay your Property Taxes before March 30th, you’ll get a 10% discount (there was a rumor that the date was the end of January. However, this cut-off was in reference to any back-taxes owing).
You can pay at the Comisario’s office in San Carlos, Monday to Saturday 8:00am – 3:00pm.
Payments are accepted by cash (pesos only), check, credit card or debit card.
You need to have your tax number, so bring a receipt from a previous year.
Also, it’s time to pay the annual fee on your Post Office Box. The fee for 2010 is 300 pesos.

Around San Carlos & Guaymas in Pictures
This photo was taken from the sundial. Yes, there’s a sundial in San Carlos. It’s a short walk to a spectacular view. The marker by the sundial claims that it is “one of the most beautiful views in all of Mexico”. To get there, take the road towards the MarinaTerra Beach Club. Just before the parking lot, turn left into the residential area. Park. Walk through the wrought iron gates, up the hill to the end of the paved road. Then keep going out to the end of the point.

Where are the Fish?

The beginning of the week was slow and rainy, but the last few days have been awesome! The yellowtail are coming up at first light a few miles out and are chasing bait up to the surface over a large area. They are easy to catch trolling. We lost one large one yesterday and landed a 20 pound fish the day before off of the sea mounts. There are still a few large fish hanging around there throughout the day. The fish farther out are 6-9 pounds. They go down around 9:00am or earlier, though a few will continue to surface. We have tried bottom fishing a reef in this area and have caught some nice fish - a lot of small to large golden spotted sea bass, a 12 pound white sea bass, a couple 8-10 pound grouper, other bottom fish, and one 16 pound red grouper. Lots of fish to eat!
A few days ago I caught some nice pargo and a couple 11 pound corvina with a friend from shore. The water is warm. There was a patch that read 72 degrees just 16 miles out today on Terrafin.com. There are still skipjack out there, and we caught some large ones. A striped marlin could show up any day, or some small dorado, and you never know when the tuna will arrive. They are still catching all the warm water species off of Cabo in water up to 78 degrees. The summer fishing could be just a month away!

A Message from Castaway Kids

Year 2010 has started off with a bang at Castaway Kids! The Construction Committee has succeeded in stretching $57,000 in post-Jimena donations to build or re-roof 40 houses for victims of Jimena who lost everything, through the physical labor of many of our own volunteers and the homeowners themselves. Thirty-two have been completed (mostly concrete block and brick) and 8 more are ready to start and should be completed in the next two weeks! Some other organizations have volunteered to come help build some homes for families who have needs not necessarily related to Jimena and new volunteers are showing up for our meetings and asking how they can help. The word is getting out as to how much this organization is accomplishing and people want to be a part of it.
In our other area of primary interest, student sponsorship, 15 new sponsors stepped up, many of them through our gift certificate program over the holidays. They will be meeting their students and beginning new relationships in the months to come.
Thank you to all of our members and volunteers for making a difference in the lives of others -- and in their own. Come to a meeting or share our website or newsletter with your friends. Castaway Kids is a growing force!

Oye Como Va - Umph! Yes we have mariachis!
Ten years ago when Marina Terra was Plaza Las Glorias, a lovely waitress named Sandra was allowed to take a break from waiting tables and sing two songs with the local grupo Mexicano during the nights she worked. Since then she has taught herself violin and has been in three different Mariachi troupes in the past five years (the Beatles broke up after eight years!).
She is currently singing with “Mariachi Mar de Cortez”. Their version of Santana’s “Oye Como Va” will make you wanna sing along. Her favorite musical mariachi piece is “Guadalajara”. Sandra’s favorite Gringo song is Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You”.
Sandra was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, also the birthplace of this native music, and has been a San Carlos resident for a long time. Last year her group went to Las Vegas and played the Hilton. Dennis Brascom helped sponsor them (except for their gambling!). The mariachis had a successful trip with their music and Sandra lost three dollars (USD) at the tables. Que lastima!
Check the calendar of events for this talented musician and watch for them around San Carlos and at the Red Lounge in Guaymas. For booking information, please call 622-109-0108.
