Weekly Fishing Reports for San Carlos Sonora Mexico from What’s Up San Carlos
some good numbers of fish 35 miles to the west past San Pedro
There are tuna around! The afternoon bite is usually the best, but most boats are back at the dock by then. Tuna weighing up to 40 pounds have been caught this week.
The small ‘football’ sized tuna were caught only four to six miles out. We caught several of our sailfish and some eating-size dorado in close. There are plenty of small skipjack just offshore, some sierra mackerel are starting to show, and small dorado are there too.
Now is the time to be fishing in San Carlos! We had a plague of green water last week, but it is quickly clearing up. The algae bloom was extremely late this year and I believe is mainly caused by the cold water mixing with the warm water. The cold water from winter though will [read more ...]
San Carlos Yacht Club/Rescate de San Carlos: 11th Annual International Fishing Tournament; June 3 – 5, 2011
We’ve been out this week a couple of times to the Island. Both days had good bites, with the action picking up in the afternoon. The first day saw us catching consistent fish on the jigs just off the south end of the Island.
We had a busy Semana Santa week, but not that many people were here to go fishing. We were able to catch some nice cabrilla and pargo on a few trips in the bay. One big fat female cabrilla weighed almost 15 pounds. I’m sure the two fishermen in the little panga next to us [read more ...]
The town is getting ready for the big party. Most of the boats this weekend will just be cruising around blaring music. I haven’t heard of anyone going to the Island. The full moon should be waning and hopefully some reports will start to come in. Earlier in the week we saw multiple schools of [read more ...]
There were very few reports of yellowtail caught this week. I heard many rumors of fish seen, but most of the few reports that I heard of that went out searching and found nothing. We all want the fish to show up, but they’ll show up when winter finally lets up. It’s not over yet.
We were at the Island on Friday on a nice glass-calm day. Schools of yellowtail started hitting the surface on the north end.
Well, reports of marlin and dorado circulated yesterday, but they are probably fleeing with the wind today. The water warmed up into the low 70´s and we actually saw flying fish earlier in the week. We consistently found small to medium-sized yellowtail right off of Doble and to the south most mornings. At times they weren´t biting, [read more ...]
We were out last Friday for a couple of hours during which we were bringing in 8-12 pound fish until they were jumping out of the box.
One boat went over to Tortuga Island 54 miles out for a great catch of large yellowtail and a half dozen medium-sized cabrilla.
Things are slowly turning around in the San Carlos fishing arena. It has been a year of up and down fishing. We were out mid-week after hearing of a few fish being caught to land five out of ten fish at the Island. The reports on Friday were not great, though they turned on in [read more ...]

On February 16, the fishing boat “High and Dry” caught three nice grouper, all within a couple of hours of each other. The biggest one was 32lbs caught by Wayne Beitelspacherch. The catch was on early in the afternoon. The photo shows David Marshall and Wayne Beitelspacher holding up their catch from fishing on February [read more ...]
We had a beautiful week of weather after the fishing tournament with lots of good fish being caught. I made it out on Thursday with a charter for the best fishing I’ve ever experienced.
The stars of the tournament with 1st place in all five jackpots though was Fun Ticket, led by Capt. Sergio.

We caught yellowtail until sunset, and could barely lift our arms by the end of the day. We caught lots of nice fish with the biggest weighing 29 pounds.
San Carlos Fishing Report December 8: it’s yellowtail season!
The bonita came back in and the inshore fishing was excellent.
The yellowtail are still showing up off of San Antonio in the 8-11 pound class. The striped marlin are still hanging off of San Antonio, just outside and even in with the yellowtail. On Friday, we headed out 34 miles to catch five nice bull dorado in the 10-18 pound class.
The OCV (Conventions and Visitors Bureau) now sells fishing licences. Cost, more information and location.
We were out 15-25 miles on Thursday catching about ten dorado up to 20 pounds.
Some boats have been picking up medium sized yellowtail at San Antonio, along with bonita. From reports just a little up the coast past La Manga, we should see some large sierra soon. As boats were picking up yellowtail and bonita out front, they were also seeing marlin, sailfish, and dorado!
