Save the date, and start training for a San Carlos triathlon, on

October 16, 2010.

Participants will complete "sprint distances" of a 750-meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and 5 kilometer run.

Starting from the white sand beach at Playa Posada, swimmers will plunge into 80 degree water for an exciting swim through the Sea of Cortez. The bike leg takes participants along the Bahia toward Catch 22 Beach, then up to El Mirador, where the short, steep grade presents the most arduous challenge of the day. The reward is a gorgeous view of the rugged coastline, where the reddish mountains of the desert plunge into the deep blue sea. After riding back to Playa Posada, triathletes run along the main street of San Carlos, past shops and businesses and groups of cheering spectators.

Male and female categories are divided into under-40 and over-40, and relay teams are also encouraged to participate.

Prizes are offered for the top three in each category, however the focus is on fun. A grand fiesta is planned for the finish line.

The registration fee is only $300 pesos ($24 USD) and all proceeds benefit the Lions Club of Guaymas, a volunteer organization committed to helping children with physical and mental challenges enjoy life through outdoor and experiential activities.
