Fishing Report

fishing report san carlos mexicoThe days haven’t been too hot and sunny with some good cloud cover but no rain. The mornings have been breezy and the water looks to have cooled off a degree or two.

We headed out on Tuesday and caught one striped marlin and a couple of small dorado. One boat that was out fifty miles landed five nice dorado and a marlin. I heard one report that the fishing was good on the other side. With this weekend’s Labor Day tournament coming up, someone better find out where the fish are! The hot spot can change in a day though.

The bait has started to show up farther out and in the bay which is a good sign. I was out a couple of evenings for an hour of light and caught plenty of sierra mackerel to smoke. There were tons of skipjack around too. Coming in after sunset, the screen was ‘lit up’ with bait from top to bottom in the Bahia. There are a lot of small dorado in the bay, but please stick to your limit of two per person. Be patient and you should find a few keepable fish. Give them a few more months and these fish will be much larger (5 – 15 pounds). They grow very fast. Break out the light tackle and have fun with them at the moment though. I think we’ll have good fishing in close this Fall. The La Nina currents may bring in cooler water earlier than expected along with the Humbolt Squid that never showed last year.

Come down to the Marina this weekend to see if we’re catching anything. Weigh-in should be in the afternoons after 4:00pm and Monday after 3:00pm. My friends said they lost a tuna that looked to be almost 150 pounds last Sunday, so you never know. The fishing should slowly get better here with some bigger fish coming in. For me, October can’t come soon enough, but it can’t get any hotter, can it?

News Bites

  • Hurricane Frank has been downgraded to a remnant low and there are no longer any coastal watches or warnings in effect. San Carlos’ five-day forecast is for sun or partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid to high 30s. There is a broad area of low pressure located several hundred miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico that is bringing us some clouds and possibly rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page (including Storm Pulse and NOAA graphics for the area).
  • From now on, in Mexico, you will need a prescription to purchase antibiotics. Read more.

Say Hola to Mexican Beer

Cervezas at San Carlos Plaza“Dos cervezas, por favor.” These were the first Spanish words I learned. And after 16 years, I still use them frequently.

The majority of beers crafted in Mexico are light, refreshing and especially wonderful when accompanied by a slice of fresh lime while sitting on a patio in San Carlos trying to beat this summer heat.

During a recent trip to Mazatlan, upon learning of my German heritage, our tour guide promptly told us that it was the arrival of German immigrants and the brief reign of Emperor Maximilian of Austria in the mid-19th century that helped to create the art of beer brewing in Mexico. Our guide was notably fond of the Pacifico brand, which was originally brewed in his city.

Here is a guide to some of Mexico’s most popular beers. The number of calories per 12-ounce serving is listed in parentheses.

Bohemia: Hoppy and dry with a hint of malt, this beer is made in the Czech pilsner style. The name comes from the Bohemia district of the Czech Republic that is known for beer. (135)

Carta Blanca: Brewed in the Mexican lager tradition, this refreshing golden beer is lightly carbonated and has a sweet, slightly metallic aftertaste. The name means “white card” in Spanish, which in the late 1800’s were given to people as a sign of respect. (128)

Corona: Pale straw in color, it’s a light lager that is slightly sweet with a hint of hops. The distinctive ‘crown’ logo from which Corona takes its name is based on the crown that adorns the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The crown itself is modeled after a crown that is rumored to have belonged to a mistress of Emperor Maximilian. Unlike most beers, it is bottled in a clear bottle. Corona is one of the five most-consumed beers in the world, the # 1 imported beer in the US, and available in more than 150 countries. (Light, 109; Extra, 148)

Dos Equis Amber: This light lager is pale yellow with a quickly dissipating head that opens to aromas of grain and corn. Originally, the beer was named “Siglo XX”, (meaning “20th century” in Spanish), with the double X (dos equis) standing for the number 20, and it commemorated the arrival of the 20th century. (145)

Negra Modelo: Brewed in the Vienna style, this is a thick, dark ale prized for its coppery color, hearty body, and toffee-like aftertaste. (165)

Sol: Dark gold and crystal clear, this minimally carbonated light lager hints at hops and offers a slightly bitter finish. The name came from a ray of sunshine that fell on a pot used in its brewing. (131)

Pacifico Clara: This pale gold, somewhat thin lager carries notes of corn and yeast with a citrusy, grassy, dry finish. Named after the Pacific Ocean, the picture on the bottle is that of the Deer Islands off the coast of Mazatlan surrounded by a lifesaver. (146)

Tecate: Pale yellow and clear. Tecate is a light, bright lager with a smooth body, clean aroma and crisp finish. It was named after the city of Tecate in Baja California. Tecate was the first canned beer in Mexico, and is currently the most imported canned beer in the United States. It is a well-known brand due to its patronage of sports teams and sporting events. (Light, 110; Regular, 146)

Today, almost 90% of all beer in Mexico is produced by two big breweries. Grupo Modelo is the biggest brewing company in Mexico and is based in Mexico City. Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma is the older of the two companies and is based in Monterrey.

The Mexican beer industry employs 90,000 people and 800,000 jobs in this country are related to it indirectly. The beer industry is one of Mexico’s most prolific with 63% of the domestic population consuming one or more of the brands, and Mexico ranking third in global exports of beer.

In San Carlos, most restaurants and bars will sell either the Grupo Modelo brands (made up of Negra Modelo, Modelo Especial, Pacífico, Corona, and Victoria), or the Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma brands (which include Tecate, Sol, Dos Equis, Carta Blanca, Indio, and Bohemia). This is because their liquor license requires them to choose between the two brands to be sold at their establishment.

Regardless of your beer of choice, before that next swig, why not take a moment to reflect on the history and unique taste, and raise your glass and say “hola” to Mexican beer…or you could simply follow the advice of popular country musician Kenny Chesney and “sit right here and have another beer in Mexico”

Castaway Kids

castaway kidsCastaway Kids’ sponsored students get backpacks for start of school

A Message from Terry Lynn Challis, President
Castaway Kids

Even though the majority of Castaway Kids‘ volunteers as well as student sponsors are in their summer places right now, it doesn’t mean no work is going on. Thanks to our Adelante Estudiante Backpack Committee, headed by Lauri Cooney, 80 backpacks have been filled with school supplies so that our sponsored students can start school with everything they’ll need to do well this year. Tammi Miller, Orlando Rendon and Georgina Bedran have been busy delivering the backpacks to the schools for distribution to the students.

Sponsored students were also given vouchers so they might obtain school and sports uniforms and their tuitions have been paid from their sponsors’ accounts. It has been a big project to put together an organizational “tree” to see this is done for our now 90 sponsored students, and of course, we are still looking for ways to streamline the process. We are also looking for anyone who’d like to be involved in this organizational, behind the scenes work. If you have any interest in pitching in, e-mail me at adelante.estudiante@yahoo.com and tell me what skill set you might bring to our group.

Another idea for community involvement: Lots of stores have school supplies on sale right now. We’ll need 500 spiral notebooks, as well as enough pens, markers, colored pencils, scientific calculators, etc. for at least 100 students for next year’s “first day of school”. We will happily accept donated supplies in any quantity this fall when all of us snowbirds start coming back to San Carlos. We’ll also need a new Committee Chair for this committee.

One more thing I’d like to mention– David Irons, Christa Thomas and Pam Brame have been putting in some hours changing our website, www.castawaykidsmx.org to a new domain, making it easier to post updates for Committee Heads and for updating information. Check it out and recommend it to your friends. Also, do us a favor and become a fan on Facebook! Thank you David, Christa & Pam!!
