Fishing Report

It was a fantastic week of fishing for dorado. I can't remember ever having fishing this good! We limited out several days with nice bull dorado in the 12-23 pound range. Yesterday, I could have counted the missed strikes on my jig into the hundreds. There were often a couple dozen fish fighting over the jig. If a fish was under 15 pounds I'd do my best to let it throw the lure loose and within seconds of the lure re-hitting the water, another fish would take it.

The tuna are out there too, including some big ones. An 80 pound and 120 pound fish were caught, which sure makes for some nice sushi blocks! The fish were first found on Thursday and I ran down to get fresh Ahi for Ruby Wine Bar's sushi night. There were nice 25-30 pound yellowfin. They made another good showing on Saturday about thirty miles out. On Sunday it seemed that everyone was limited out with dorado by noon and we were the only ones still out looking for the tuna.

We caught a couple nice blue marlin in the 200 pound range, but somehow all our sailfish seemed to throw the hook. They were nice big ones though. We caught a couple striped marlin as well. They've even been seen close to shore. We passed a big black that took a look at our lures just a mile out.

In shore the skipjack seemed to dissapear mid-week. There are some sierra around, but you'll have to find them in the bay. It sounds like there are some cabrilla showing up along the rocks. The pangueros are out there catching small red snapper if you want to pick some up in the Esterito at the fish camp for 50 pesos a kilo. I watched one guy pull in his net by the Plaza San Carlos and he was very happy with the catch. He filled his bucket with small yellowtailed red snapper, roosterfish, ladyfish, jacks, and mullet. Inshore action should keep getting better.

Water temperatures dropped fast with last weekend's wind, but they have stabilized at around 79-81 degrees. The clarity has improved a bit and the 'blue water' in closer. The water was glass calm most days and we started to see fish tailing on the surface with the cooler temperatures. The fishing is interesting and it is far from over. One friend averaged five billfish a day on a three-day trip to the other side. Still a few weeks away from seeing some yellowtail higher up in the water column or any bonita. One thing I know is that we'll be finding something to catch this month!
