Passport Needed to Enter Mexico

According to the Canadian Consulate, as of March 1st, 2010, “all Canadian citizens need a valid passport to enter Mexico. Canadian citizens without a valid passport will not be allowed entry into Mexico and will be returned to Canada. In order to avoid delays and misunderstandings, we strongly recommend that you travel with a passport valid for six months after your arrival date”.

This requirement is also applicable to US citizens as stated by the US Embassy in Mexico: “As of March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including children — must present a valid passport, book or card, for travel beyond the “border zone” into the interior of Mexico. Entry by any means, for example by plane or car, is included in this requirement. The “border zone” is generally defined as an area between 20 to 30 kilometers of the border with the U.S., depending on the location”.

This new Mexican law shouldn’t affect Canadian or US citizens too drastically. I’m sure we all travel with our passports since we have to show them to re-enter the United States. Where we might feel the effect is in longer delays at the border.

Telcel Phones will Expire

Registering is an easy process that the Telcel store on Beltrones can help you with.

Carne_asada_2010Carne_asada_2010If you missed the annual Carne Asada, you missed the cutest show in town. The food was tasty and plentiful and Sandra’s Mariachi provided excellent entertainment as always. But the show stoppers were the brightly costumed students from the Ranchito’s school who performed several traditional dances.

Congratulations to the Principal, teachers and PTA at the school and thank you to Rotary for a very fun afternoon.

Where are the Fish?

Every time I think that the fishing may be slowing down, it picks up again. The sierra were running very strong last week and were easy to catch with small lures. At times there were larger 5-6 pound fish, with the largest up to 7 pounds. I didn’t hear of any reports from the Island due to the strong winds all week. Things should be calming down and warming up for this week though.

I’m thinking that maybe the yellowtail will be biting good this week before they possibly start their spawning period ten days before the full moon. They seem pretty ripe with eggs and other ‘stuff’ and may not wait for the next moon phase. We’ll see. There are still lots of smaller yellowtail around that may continue to bite.

Some big fish were being caught in close off of San Antonio this week in shallow water. Unfortunately, many of the large fish we caught quickly found the rocks in the shallow water. If you choose light tackle, then expect a short-lived battle. We’ll see if the fishing at San Antonio continues to be good this week. The Island should be turning on though as it usually does in the Spring.

Hope to see you on the water. It looks like we’ll be out most every day with all the ‘spring breakers’!

Who’s Who in Entertainment?

Omar Arriaga

Local musician, Omar Arriaga, lives in San Carlos with his wife Kathy, and performs daily with a different show every day. Please check the calendar below for current hot spots where he is playing.

Nine Questions for Omar:

What was the first concert you ever saw? In Ciudad Obregón, when I was in High School my mom, as a rarity, took me to a concert by Juan José Calatayud, a great Mexican Jazz pianist who died in 2003. Only a few people attended, but he said: “so few of us, we shall have a good concert nonetheless”. I had never seen or heard anything like that, it impressed me very much.

What are you listening to these days? More music than ever. When little, I listened to any, or all the music that came near me. As I grew up, I became more selective, until I only listened to Classical, Folkloric, Jazz & Experimental Music for many years. Now I listen to almost any music again, with a receptive set of mind to absorb what is ‘good’ or appreciated about each variation. Short answer: Classical, Jazz, Blues, Boogie, Folk, Latin, Rock, Pop . . .

What was the first album you owned? I listened to old records and tapes for a long time at my grandparents’ and mother’s houses. Maybe the first one I bought was a very inexpensive tape (only one I could afford) of “Instrumental Hits” with standard melodies and movie themes.

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don’t get? Hip Hop, most Rap, Reggaeton, Mexican drug songs, “Trop-Rock”.

What musical act, current or defunct would you most like to see perform live? Pavarotti singing “Nessun Dorma“.

Musically speaking what is your favorite guilty pleasure? Being a performer now; I hope being a composer will be my guilty pleasure in some future.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral? Once I’m dead, would it matter at all? Anyways: Air on G String by Bach.

What band or artist changed your life and how? When I came back to Sonora from a long non-musical period, Daniel Moreno invited me to work with the rock band “Utopia” (now defunct). I learned the ropes of being a working-performing musician in it, and then I quit when I realized that that could not be my destiny, to instead face the world using my creativity and power.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time? I’ve always loved “The John Lennon Collection” and rarely have found myself liking all the songs put together in an album. I’ve loved and missed such a beautiful and brave person as John.

Help the Community

For those of you who may be packing up to head north in the near future, please help Castaway Kids help the Food Kitchens in Guaymas by taking “left-over” non-perishable food items to one of 4 drop-off locations.

Due to the economic recession, more people are showing up for a hot meal and fewer food donations are coming in — they’re having to turn hungry people away for lack of food — please put some items in the bins at one of these locations and we will see that they are shared with the volunteer kitchens in Guaymas.

Drop-off Locations:  SeaSide Reservations next to the Catholic Church; Seaside-Long Realty in Plaza Arrecifes (behind old Pemex); ERA Realty in Plaza Las Palmas & REMAX.
