  • World Cup 2010 update: Mexico plays heavily favored France on Thursday at 11:30am in the World Cup. A victory or tie would be huge. Five Palms Restaurant, San Carlos, Sonora: Breaking Records Against All Odds

When owner Nino Aidi told his friends and business associates that he was going to extend his Five Palm Restaurant chain to San Carlos they told him he was crazy.  They told him that this was too risky and the timing for opening a new restaurant wasn’t good however, they forgot that Nino loves the impossible and thrives on risk.  Not only has the latest location thrived, in the two short weeks since opening day the restaurant broke all records among all of his other locations!

In San Carlos the clientele is a bit different from his restaurants in Obregon and Hermosillo due to a large expat population.  What he has found is that instead of his usual lunch and dinner hours of 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. respectively, he now has lunch customers at noon and diners at 5:00 p.m. which are dining hours more familiar to Canadians and Americans.  In other words, he doubled his business with the new location and if that is not enough proof that his new restaurant in San Carlos is a success; he already has repeat customers, and that includes me!

Born and raised in Paris, France Nino learned the art of hospitality through his family’s hotels; Royal Monceau in France and Cham Palace in the Middle East.  His Syrian and French culinary background are expressed in the interesting, extensive, and savory menu. While living in the United States to expand his English language skills Nino met his lady love and followed her to Obregon, Sonora.  He said he fell in love with the Mexican people and the food, especially the tacos!  His exposure to American dishes and Mexican fare add another layer of interest to the menu.  read more…..

Where are the Fish?

fishing sierra

Are you staying cool?
Tough fishing out on the water. Sometimes though the ride is enjoyable enough! Had a few afternoons with lots of sailfish coming up. They are tough to hook though. A lot of smaller fish that aren’t taking the baits too well. Only a few reports of dorado being caught, yet they are larger fish. Some of us are thinking with the lack of squid around that the fish are following them. Not too many flying fish either. Other baits could move in at any time though.
I saw a couple tuna schools come up very briefly last week, but they were back down within seconds. Only a few tuna were caught, with one close to 90#. Some big marlin into the 300# range are around but many of them are just ‘sleepers’. They must get hungry at some point though. Our action inshore was a little spotty for sierras with so much bait and seaweed around in close.
A couple days of wind, but for the most part the days have been very nice out there. It’s starting to get a little warm if the wind isn’t blowing. Not quite as much life out there these days, but you never know. We had dolphin following us for an hour the other day. Lots of mantas jumping in close. We passed a nice little whale shark the other day. We stopped the boat and it came right up to us. I pulled out the snorkel gear and dove in with it. I think it was contemplating how to remove some of the half dozen ramoras on it.
July Fourth weekend will see the International Fishing Tournament hosted by Ernesto Zaragosa. Hope to see you there for this three day event that is always a lot of fun!

Diving Report

We had some windy days, but especially early in the mornings, we had some excellent diving opportunities. In the shallow coves, the water is warming up steadily and in some spots reaches 83 degrees Fernheit, but as you go deeper, it drops to 78 F. Visibility greatly varies from 5 to 40 feet, so choose your dive site wisely.

At San Pedro Island, the water is between 73 F at one hundred feet and 79 F at the surface. Visibility was over 50 feet, especially a little deeper. I played with a little electric bullseye ray. They are rechargeable with 14 volts. I also found these interesting venus girdles again. They are 4 feet stretched jellyfish, but sideways, so they are 4 feet wide and 4 inch long. They do not have tentacles that sting and are beautiful to watch in the sunlight.

Let’s hope we don’t get too familiar with hurricanes Blast and Celia. Everybody else is more than welcome and keep on diving.

Who’s Who in Entertainment?

Bobby (of the Bobby and Leslie Duo) has been in San Carlos for muchos anos..and is known for his 12-string guitar style and wonderful stage presence. His Rock roots go back to “rubbing shoulders” and performing with the Byrds, Spanky and our Gang, the Association and other 60′s and 70′s acts.

He has a recording studio in San Carlos and has played most of the venues here including Bananas, La Palapa Griega, and currently at Evies….

1. First concert; Peter, Paul & Mary. OMG, how I loved Mary Travers.  (or was it lust?)

2. First album; Music over Directv’s XM Satellite Classic Rock. My Domestico loves this stuff.

3. First album; Meet the Kingston Trio

4. Genre I don’t get; MTV and the flavor-of-the-month talent singing through auto tuners

5. Act I’d like to see live; Crystal Bowersox. Mamasox roxs. I think she’s the best they’ve ever had on IDOL

6. My guillty pleasure; Addicted to American Idol.

7. Funeral music; Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, or the classic, St James Infirmary (…tell em Bobby’s been here and gone)

8. Band/artist who impacted me; Terry Kirkman of the Association. In his pre-Association days, Terry managed a club in Upland, CA where I played.  His nightly critiques, after hours, helped me grow as a performer.

9. Favorite album; No contest: The Beatles “Rubber Soul”… Coolest cover and the music was insane!
