Conservation of our Sea
Local businessman Vince Radice recently went to Washington, DC to meet with Rebecca Lent from the Office of International Affairs with NOAA (The National Oceans & Atmospheric Administration) about fish conservation in the US and Mexico. Vince is trying to put pressure on the US to stop US companies from importing dorado that is illegally caught in Mexico into the US. He is requesting the US to enforce laws that are already in place (the Lacey Act).
It is illegal to commercially fish or export to other countries species such as dorado, sail fish and marlin. They are reserved for sport fishing. Yet, many thousands of pounds of these fish are illegally brought across the border into the US annually to be sold in US markets. It appears that little or no effort is being exerted to enforce the Lacey Act.
Vince brought and read letters that represented more than 50,000 people who care about and support this issue. Rebecca Lent also acknowledged receiving emails from many of you (as Vince requested in a previous issue of What’s Up San Carlos). She seemed very sympathetic to the cause, but Dale Jones, Director of Law Enforcement, said that he refuses to do anything about it until the Mexican government makes a formal request.
Vince is now going to contact the head of NOAA, Jane Lubchenco. She has the power to order Dale Jones to prosecute companies who illegally import fish from Mexico.
Vince is again asking us to send emails to support this cause, this time to Jane Lubchenco. If you would like to help Vince, please copy and paste this letter into an email and send it to Jane Lubchenco.
Read Vince’s account of his trip.

Where are the Fish?
Another beautiful week in San Carlos. The fishing might not always be good, but the boatrides are! We did have several great days of fishing this week though. The weather has been fairly nice. Not sure how great it will be after tomorrow though! A lot of the ‘warmwater’ winter/fall fish are still here. I was very suprised to catch two nice sierra today. There have been some nice bonita off of San Antonio, which is fairly late for them to still be around. The water is almost warm enough for another striped marlin to pop up. One was caught just after Christmas. We’re going to get some unusually strong winds from the south, but then it will turn back towards our normal NW winter direction. There is some crazy weather predicted for California, so maybe we’ll experience a good brush of winter. For now though it feels like Spring!
We had some good catches of up to ten bonita this week with some getting to 9 pounds. Today I jigged up five small yellowtail (6-8 pounds) while the charter brought up nice catches of small to medium sized calicos and other bottomfish. We were fishing off of San Antonio Point. A couple larger fish were caught at the seamounts just outside the harbor. There is a lot of bait there, so things could turn on there anytime. One client was suprised today as he dropped his bait and a 14 pound yellowtail grabbed it! Haven’t heard of too many good reports from the Island. Some good grouper and other bottomfish are being caught farther out during the calm days.
Our tip of the week is to use braided multifiliament line for bottomfishing. You will feel the bites better and be able to set the hook better to the low-stretch properties of the line. Sharpen your hooks too. If you are still too slow on the hookset or want to use monofiliament line, then try using circle hooks. The fish will hook themselves!
tight lines, Bryan

What’s Happening in the Water?
Johan Broere’s Dive Report
This year the water is 10° F warmer than last year. Even at 100 feet deep we are enjoying warmer water. Normally you would swim into thermoclines that are definitely cooler. Not this year. 64 to 66° F is very nice for this time of the year. Is the cooler water still coming? The whales did not wait for it. I spotted three just west of San Pedro Island. It is always impressive to see these giant animals.
There are not many divers in the water, so if you don’t care for crowded boats, this is your chance. If you just want to give it a try but are not certified, dive shops offer the Discover Scuba programs. First, you go to class and then you go diving with an instructor and it does count towards your certification if you decide to continue your education.
We saw more lobsters than usual and added some more species of shells to our collection. San Carlos Bay has been very nice with the wind coming mostly from the North and the visibility has been 25 to 30 feet. Come on down and have a look at all the fish the other guys talk about.
Always dive with a buddy, Johan.

Who’s Who in Entertainment?
Manuelito y Tus Güerreros
(Little Manuel and His Warriors)
Manuel and his cumbia music rocks! This hombre and his new band of one year rhythmically strut around the stage in their maroon oxford shirts and the crowds just can’t get enough.
Manuel Armenta was playing in a band out of Guaymas twenty years ago called Alto Voltaje, He then decided to start this new band featuring Felipe Osuna on acoustic and electric guitars, Xavier Garcia on bass, Manuel Garcia on piano and Demetrio Sandoval on percussion and drums. This group all sing, but the main man Manuel does most of the moves.
When these musicians play Club de Capitanes every Friday, you can see all five on the stage keeping the dancers dancing. Drink specials include the ice cold Chope dark, draft beer, and the clam chowder is amazing! They play from 7:00pm until 10:00pm. Get there early, as the place always fills up for them!
By the way, they also play at Bananas every Saturday night from 8:00pm until 11:00pm. They have delicious Mexican dishes and drink specials. Last Saturday Felipe sang a rendition of “Get Back” by the Beatles. Amazing.
The name of the band is sometimes also called “RETRO”. For booking info, call 222-7856 or cell 622-100-5929.
