Where are the Fish?

bryan replogle fish

Always some fish to catch in San Carlos! I just got dragged up and down the shoreline for twenty minutes before landing the biggest corvina of my life at about 20 pounds. It was too beautiful to keep and of course I left my camera at home. Saw a great catch of snapper today, so there are some showing up in the deeper water. We had one calm day earlier in the week where we found a great catch of grouper, calico sea bass, and whitefish just a few miles out. I hadn’t see so many boats on the water since the holidays. One of my captains was out today just outside the harbor for a couple hours and came back with a half dozen 4-7 pound sierra. The water is warm this year! If the weather would cooperate the warm water fish would soon move in.

Ruby Wine Bar hosted the 4th Annual Yellowtail Tournament put on by Catch 22 Sportfishing and Team Margarita Sportfishing. Nine boats came out in the rough seas but braved through it. Our team stayed in close and found a good bite from 9-10am off of San Antonio. Most of the fish were small, but we found one 17 pound fish the first day and I caught one at 22.8 pounds, which was the second largest of the Tournament. We lost one big one outside the harbor, but there weren’t many fish caught there. Most of the boats fished the Island for a lot of small yellowtail, though a few boats found some big ones. Costa Lotta found some large fish there the first day, with the biggest fish of the tournament at 24.2 pounds. They took home $600 for the big fish award. Team Anna Lin took first in weight with 143 pounds, Mr. Ed scored large fish on the second day with a total of 128 pounds, and Team Reel Fun totaled 86 pounds for third place. Team Margarita was in fourth place, but ended up in first place in the $250 and $100 Saturday jackpots. Second place in these jackpots went to Team Telamon and third place went to Catch 22′s Team Shamrock. The party at Ruby Wine Bar on Saturday was LOTS of fun for all.

I’m still not quite sure how I was able to run the half marathon the next day! Weather looks a little rough this week, but the fish will still be there once things calm down.

Who’s Who in Entertainment?

Eric Holland, who writes about local musicians in San Carlos, will periodically feature “Nine Questions” with various local talent. This week’s featured artist is Christie Forester.

You can hear Christie playing the Saturday service at 5:00pm and Sunday service at 9:00am at the San Carlos Community Church. She recently played for a beach wedding and will be playing at the Art Show at the Yacht Club on March 13th at 4:00pm.

What was the first concert you ever saw? A piano concert, when I was six years old. As a classical music participant I was so nervous that I played my song an octave higher in an effort to be as far away from the audience as possible. My mother was not happy!

What are you listening to these days? As the pianist at San Carlos Community Church, I am frequently asked to learn songs by listening to them on YouTube. I am always excited to see what happens at my piano as I reinterpret these songs.

What was the first album you owned? I think it was an album of Malay folk songs. As a missionary kid living in Singapore, playing with the kids in my neighborhood required my learning their songs.

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don’t get? Rap embodies music unfamiliar to my ear.

What musical act, current or defunct would you most like to see perform live? Celine Dion performing “The Prayer”. Her interpretation of this song is a powerful example of words coming alive through music.

Musically speaking what is your favorite guilty pleasure? The undisciplined joy of creating music in the moment. After years of classical training as a child, always adding to the written music I was asked to play; the freedom I feel allowing God to use my gift during a church service without having a teacher tell me to color musically within the lines.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral? I have always told my children that I recorded my music so that they would know what to play at my funeral! “Amazing Grace” is a favorite….my interpretation is on my CD, Into My Heart.

What band or artist changed your life and how? Sophia Reid, who lives here in San Carlos suggested I make an album, however, Leslie Sahlen made the dream come alive in her studio. Seven albums later she still knows how to create an environment where my music flows.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time? OK, the question is too hard. You will have to put that figurative gun to my head!

Christie’s latest CD is Beloved. Her CDs can be purchased at Sagatario or online at CDBaby. You can hear Christie Forester’s Beloved Village on YouTube.
