Semana Santa

semana santaThe main road was opened in time and the people came flooding into San Carlos for spring break.

According to Comisario Alcantar, 338,520 people (67,769 vehicles) descended on San Carlos for the four day party. That is more cars and more visitors than in previous years. 20% of them stayed in hotels and spent, on average, 980 pesos per person. The other 80% camped or stayed with friends and spent, on average, 350 pesos per person.

The Comisario and the police were kept busy with minor incidents, but there were no deaths or major injuries and fewer incarcerations than in previous years.

When spring break is over, what will happen with the main boulevard? The three bridges were 90% complete before being provisionally filled and tarred to accommodate the influx of tourists. After spring break, work will resume. The Federal Government will be making a large financial contribution to the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes to enable the local government to finish the projects.

San Carlos Clean-Up Day

Semana Santa left our pretty little town in need of a clean-up. So, in honor of Earth Day, Pro San Carlos and the Comisario are organizing a San Carlos-wide clean-up for Saturday, April 17th, at 9:00am. Many people, businesses and organizations have volunteered to help.

Coca-Cola and Corona are sponsoring the event and will be providing refreshments. And, the government is providing garbage bags and other supplies.

The more the merrier — if you would like to lend a hand, please email me at christa@whatsupsancarlos.com.

The following groups have volunteered to clean the following areas:

What’s Happening in the Water?

fishJohan Broere’s Dive Report

Well, that was a very interesting week. The algae of last week disappeared overnight. The forecast was for the water to warm up and it did, but first it dipped down to 59 degrees F. Today it was a pleasant 63 degrees F again. Visibility greatly improved to over 40 feet at Eagle Rock. The more protected coves had not yet completely rinsed out and visibility was about 20 feet. Still, a lot better than last week. Lots of people enjoyed the beaches with water in the shallows as warm as 70 degrees. As divers we preach to leave the beach cleaner than when you arrived, but not every Semana Santa visitor follows that rule. However, the day-after clean-up is absolutely spectacular. They always do a super job.

Come on down. Dive San Carlos

Where are the Fish?

The crowds have left but the fish sure haven’t. If you haven’t noticed all the sealife around then you need to get out to the beach. I must have seen five hundred terns in the estuary today screeching as loud as the Semana Santa crowd. They are enjoying their Spring. In between their mating rituals they are finding lots of baitfish to keep their energy up. The bay is full of huge amounts of baby sardines. Expect all the big ones to be right behind this yearly event!

We made it to San Pedro a few days ago for an epic yellowtail bite. Our new friend who had married a girl from Hermosillo brought his father and brother-in-law along. He lost the first fish to the rocks, but the old man mustered the strength to land the next one. After losing a few more fish, the young guys started winning a few battles. The father lasted for one more fish before the boys started hooking up two at time. I think he won major points with the family! It was great to finally start catching fish jigging. The fish were all around 20 pounds and were readily taking live bait and jigs. Expect a few more great weeks of yellowtail fishing before they begin to spawn on the next full moon. I’ve heard reports of the pangas catching fish up to 50 pounds. They get big in the Spring.

Today’s satellite shots show incredibly warm water on the way. Confirming that are reports of 69-71 degree water out front and pictures of marlin on the surface. A few boats have seen them lately. Expect the dorado to show up in the next few days. They might not be big at first, but they are on their way. I was told of a tuna boat that caught fish up North in cold water, so they too could show very soon. Maybe we’ll have ‘summer fishing’ by next week. I know that I’ll be getting ready.

Lots of great inshore action around. Small and larger sierras are around. The small yellowtail have been showing up sporadically at San Antonio. Lots of small skipjack are coming in on the Miramar side of the bay. All the pargo, cabrilla, and other bottomfish should turn up soon. Big grouper will also be coming in shallow to spawn. Get out on the boat to see all the great sealife that shows up this time of year. I saw a nice mako the other day and a huge manta ray at the Island. The whales should be coming by soon too.

Starfish at Castaway Kids
Terry Lynn Challis, President Castaway Kids

What’s all this talk about Starfish at Castaway Kids?
I hadn’t run into this story before and I came upon it in a wonderful book, “Half the Sky — Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide”, and it seemed so relevant to what our organization is doing: A man goes on the beach and sees that it is covered with starfish that have washed up in the tide. A little boy is walking along, picking them up and throwing them back into the water. “What are you doing, son?” the man asks. “You see how many starfish there are? You’ll never make a difference.” The boy paused thoughtfully and picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. “It sure made a difference to that one,” he said.

Many folks use the large numbers as an excuse to do nothing, but that’s not our way at Castaway Kids. We just keep plugging along, trying to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, or our students — “one starfish at a time”. We even started a new Hi 5, open handed, so it looks like a starfish. So, if you see a couple people giving an open Hi 5, think starfish — think, you can make a difference!

Castaway Kids’ next meeting is Saturday, April 10th at 10:00am at La Palapa Griega. All are welcome. Come see what we’re up to.

Ceramics Show Great Success

ceramicsThe Ceramics Show and Silent Auction held March 6 at Club Deportivo was a huge success thanks to the generosity of the San Carlos community.

All but 6 pieces were sold in the auction and the 12 Raffle items were very popular.

A big thanks to all the Raffle donors: Sagitario, Picolo’s, Off The Edge, Galeria Belles Artes, Shelly Johnson, Glenn Lowe and the Ceramics Club.

Ceramics is now closed for the season. We will re-open on November 4 and would love to see more people join us on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

We look forward to seeing everyone next season. Jan Minnich

Home Inspections

Buying a home is the biggest purchase you will ever make. Protect your investment with a Home Inspection before you sign on the dotted line. In the US and Canada, this is a common process to do before buying a home. And now this service is available here in San Carlos.

Don Brame is a licensed International Building Inspector who ran a construction company for many years in Northern Idaho. Interview with Don Brame from San Carlos Inspections:

What kinds of questions do new home buyers frequently ask you?
-Does the home have a water meter?
-Does it have a water shut off valve, or a water filtration system?
-Is the home grounded (electrically)?

Why do a home inspection?
Before you buy, find out what systems your the home has. Also, find out if you have water damage, termites, electrical problems, plumbing issues. Why wait until you move in to find out what works or what needs to be repaired.

What are some of the things one can find out during a home inspection?
You can find out:

1: The house wiring:
Some homes in San Carlos are wired with grounds, some are not. Some homes have a number of breaker panels and some have only one. A home inspection will identify breaker panels, number of circuit breakers per panel, locations of panels and check to see that the outlets in the home function, and which ones, if any, are grounded.

2: The house has minor structural damage:
Minor structural damage means the house is not likely to fall down, but you should deal with the problem before it becomes more serious. Such damage is usually caused by water seepage either into the foundation, or through the walls, windows or door. First you need to fix the cause of the problem (a leaky roof, for example), then repair or replace any damaged pieces. The more extensive the damage, the more expensive it will be to repair.

3: The house has plumbing problems:
Do all of the faucets in the house work? How about the shutoff valves to the faucets? Do your sinks, showers and tubs drain properly or do they leak? Why wait until you need to make a repair to find out if the shutoff valves are frozen. A home inspection will identify current problems that need repairs now and in the near future. This way, when you move into your new home, you will have as few surprises as possible.

Before you buy or sell a home in San Carlos, consider getting an inspection to either get top price for your home before you show it to a potential buyer, or to find out what you are buying and what needs to be repaired. There are many well-built homes in San Carlos, and with sound advice you will be sure to find a house to suit your needs.
