Mark Mulligan
Mark Mulligan returned to San Carlos last Thursday and Friday nights, playing at Hotel Fiesta Real. The crowds were entertained by Sam Rainwater opening, and on Friday night Efrain Giacoman (from the group “The Twins”) joined Mark for some songs.
Both shows were well attended and were fundraisers for Castaway Kids. Two bikes donated by RC Bicycles of Tucson were auctioned off, as well as several art pieces, and gift certificates from Bonafacio’s, Hotel Fiesta Real, Posada Condominiums, Pete’s BBQ, Off The Edge Sports, Iberri’s Pemex, Soggy Peso, captain’s Club, Marina Cantina, Rosa’s Cantina, Barracuda Bob’s, Ruby Wine Bar, Piccolo’s, and the Sagitario Gift Shop.
The shows were a rousing success and raised about $15,000 pesos for the Castaway Kids.
Thanks to everyone who attended and to all the businesses for all the support. by David J Boyd |
What’s Happening in the Water?
Johan Broere’s Dive Report
The water is warming up slowly. We enjoyed some shallow dives in 70 degrees F and deeper it went down to 66 degrees. One day at the Island it was warmer as you went deeper and the next day it reversed again. We had great visibility at the Island and the sea lions were very playful. This year’s babies are old enough to go play by themselves and the moms do not worry about them anymore. On a good day there can be a gang of fifteen or more young ones looking for trouble. On our web site we have a short video of the sea lions. You can go play with them every day and they will love you for it.
Locally the wind was a bit of a challenge but the coves gave enough protection and when we dove out the coves’ visibility was fairly reasonable, around 30 feet. We encountered a herd of spiny Sea Urchin marching up the hill just outside Martini Cove. It is group-dating and it has to do with the moon. Very romantic.
Alright, enough talk, let’s go diving !

Where are the Fish?
The dorado have arrived finally!
The water is slowly warming up and the fish are moving in. Most of the dorado will be small until the water warms into the mid-70′s. There are striped marlin around, but getting them to bite when the water is cool is not always easy. Our friends did catch one on the reef last week on a skirted ballyhoo. A few more degrees and we’ll start to see some sailfish. And, we’re all hoping that some tuna start to move in.
We made it to the Island several times last week averaging 4-5 fish a trip, and losing plenty to the rocks. We found the fish in several places around the Island, so moving around may pay off. We were surprised one day with a couple of small bonita, and the other with three large red snappers.
In close there are some sierra, skipjack, cabrilla, and pargo biting.
