San Carlos is Clean – Let’s keep it that way

San Carlos and Guaymas can accomplish great things when we all work together. On Saturday, April 17th, 300 people showed up to help clean the beaches and Nacapule in honor of Earth Day 2010.

The volunteers filled 320 large bags with garbage. And a discarded couch and several mattresses were taken from the desert to the dump.

The following areas were cleaned by these groups plus additional volunteers. Special thanks to the people in parentheses for organizing their groups:

  • San Carlos Plaza Beach: San Carlos Plaza Hotel (Alberto Astiazaran)
  • Algodones Beach: Seaside Reservations (Roberto Gracida) and Itson
  • Beach by the Soggy Peso: the Softball League (Jo Adair and Sue Fehrle) and San Carlos Rotary (Gordon Rector)
  • Playa Piedras Pintas: Rescate (Debbie Hainlen), the Yacht Club (Fern Brucker), RE/MAX (Diane and Tom Barroll) and Barracuda Bob’s (Jan Rains)
  • Beach by Marina Terra beach club: Marina Terra Hotel
  • La Posada Beach: SBPA (Margaret Palmini), Sonora is Safe and La Posada (Eddie Geisel)
  • Estuary & Pilar Beach: Castaway Kids (Lise MacNinch and Janey McLean)
  • San Francisco Beach: El Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos del Mar (Alba Reyna Gonzalez, Anastacio Catzin, Claudia Fernandez and Oralia Martinez)
  • Creston Beaches: Tia Marie’s Coastal Co-operative (Nanette Brown and Josh Morris)
  • Nacapule: Energy Zone (Shelly Johnson and Roseanne Lee) and the Athletic Club (Marie Ines Radice)
  • The paved road from Extra past Loma del Mar: Loma del Mar residents (Barbara Lange)
  • Main Blvd: the Comisario’s office

Dominoes Tournament Results

The Dominoes Tournament Fundraiser at Captain’s Club was a resounding success Saturday and concluded with two CHAMPS:

  • Jan of Barracuda Bob’s is still Mexican Train Champ
  • Doug of Sailboat KMT is the new Chicken Foot Champ

Thanks to all who played, cheered, and helped make the event a fun fundraiser.

Thanks to all the San Carlos businesses for their generous gifts. Special thanks to Barracuda Bob’s, Captain’s Club, and Phyllis Levine for their support.

What’s Happening in the Water?

Sand dollarJohan Broere’s Dive Report

It has been a beautiful week in San Carlos. In the shallow water, we had 68 and 70 degrees F. Deeper it was 64 degrees F. At San Pedro Island, it did not cool off as much and it stayed at 68 degrees at 70 feet deep. So, warmer currents are moving in. At the Island the visibility was great, up to 70 feet. Locally we have to keep in mind that the current from the north is clean and visibility is good, but as it sweeps around the corner into the bay it picks up dirt and some days visibility is not that good until it settles or when it is swept away again. Last week it varied from 15 to 40 feet. It is not time to put the wetsuits away yet, but it is great to enjoy the warm sun in between dives.

Enjoy,
Dive San Carlos

Where are the Fish?

fishIsla San Pedro is still producing outstanding catches of yellowtail. Some small fish are still in the mix, but many fish are pushing 20 pounds. Live bait works great if you can find it! The water is warming and the sardines are getting tougher to find for the pangueros. If you are patient and willing to work a bit, jigging has been paying off. Some fish are also being taken trolling. The fish are coming up to the surface at times. Many of the boils that you see are large skipjack. The weather has been excellent lately and my freezer is full!

A few boats have headed south to find some small dorado. Some marlin have been seen in the area, and one panguero even caught one on a handline at the Island! A few more degrees and the fishing should be on for dorado and marlin. Hopefully some tuna will show too! Inshore some sierra, skipjack, pargo, and cabrilla are around. Lots of bait roaming around the bay. Things could turn on real soon. The water is clearing at times and summer is just around the corner.

Time to plan that summer trip! Let me know if I can help you with vacation rentals, charter services, or the full package.

What the heck is “Terrenos Ganados al Mar”?

Vista marinaOkay, so you have experienced the magic of San Carlos and have decided to secure your niche and buy property on the waterfront. After all, where else can you live the dream of owning a luxury beachfront home in North America without being on the Rich and Famous list?

You are aware of Mexico’s Federal Zone which applies to waterfront property and you are familiar with the process of acquiring the usage rights of that Zone, no big deal. But did you know about the areas known as “Terrenos Ganados al Mar” (Land Gained to the Sea) that can exist between the Federal Zone and the deeded waterfront properties?

The Federal Zone (pertaining to the coastline) is the 20 meter deep strip of firm and usable land that borders beaches or natural deposits of marine water. The usage rights to the Federal Zone can only be acquired through a concession (or permit) by which the exclusive rights to “use and enjoy” the Federal Zone are granted. There are initial application fees and yearly renewal fees to incur for that privilege; but most of us feel it’s a small price for the advantage of living on the beach.

The “Terrenos Ganados al Mar” is a portion of land that may exist between the Federal Zone and your dream home on the beach. Both the Federal Zone and the “Terrenos Ganados al Mar” are considered public property, which means that the Federal Government is the owner of the land between you and the water!

The rights to the “Terrenos Ganados al Mar” can be acquired either through a concession (a permit similar to the Federal Zone’s) or via a public sale (auction). In a public sale, the price for the land is determined by an official appraisal and you will actually take direct title to the land, converting it into private deeded property. As great as it may sound to expand the size of your waterfront lot, it does represent a time consuming and arduous process. There are several phases of cumbersome paperwork which must be done correctly so it is important to consult with an Attorney and Surveyor who have the proper experience and knowledge.

Remember that unlike the Federal Zone, “Terrenos Ganados al Mar” does not apply to all beachfront properties, so it is a good idea to check with your Realtor before proceeding with a purchase.

Who’s Who in Entertainment?

lorena roblesLORENA ROBLES

This eclectic entertainer is now playing at the Bonifacio’s Cotton Club at 6:30pm every Monday. Her first evening performing last week was romantic, diverse, crowded and geared for ballroom dancing. Music lovers were dancing to such tunes as “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” and many other popular Portuguese, Cuban, Mexican and American classics.

Lorena’s stage presence, beauty, guitar work and background is fascinating. She was born in Hermosillo (and still lives there) and started her love for music in church and also jamming with her sisters who are all performers. Radio Sonora and the Sonora Institute of of Culture have supported her work and she has placed in music contests representing the state of Sonora performing in Mexico City. Check out this talent at both La Palapa Griega and the new Bonifacio’s Cotton Club located near the famous Soggy Peso Beach bar. Check Lorena out on YouTube.
