bryan fishing reportAlthough I was going to head out to the mountains this past week, I decided that I just couldn’t leave my loyal readers! No, unfortunately I had other business to close on. Even more unfortunate were that the tuna were running and I didn’t get to chase them. They were caught one day over the weekend and not too far out. Nice 20-30 pound fish. I haven’t heard of anyone finding them since, but only a couple of boats have been out looking. I believe that they are out there but mainly hiding in the deeper, cooler waters. Look for a cloudy day, northwest winds, or after a good rain and you might have some luck. Wait a few more weeks and I think we’ll start seeing some weekly catches.

The few boats that went out found good numbers of small to medium-sized dorado and a few billfish. I didn’t hear of any big marlin caught but that doesn’t mean that a few of the beasts aren’t out there. One wahoo was caught only eight miles out. Expect pretty good fishing and some cooler days if you head out.

In close, the small dorado schools are around but not plentiful. There are still plenty of skipjack, but they are mostly smaller ones and pretty keyed in on very small bait. We had most of our action on very small lures. We didn’t find a lot of sierra, but they are around. I think you’ll have better luck for them in close, or fishing early and late. A lot of the bait is getting pushed right into the beach and against the rocks. Just look for pelicans diving, cormorants swimming around, and other birds, and you’ll find bigger fish in that area. Throw small shiny lures that can sink down a bit to where the predators are attacking under the bait balls, and you can find some fun fishing. Heavy lures also help if you’re fishing from shore and the boil happens farther out. Just look for the birds and they’ll show you the best fishing spots around!
