Well the weather hasn’t cooled off, and neither has the fishing. Not too many boats headed out but the reports are still coming in. I talked to one guy who caught two sailfish while bottomfishing! We headed out mid-week to find some warm water with not too many fish, but a lot of thresher sharks jumping. We did find one small mile-wide pocket of water 19-20 miles out that did hold some fish. There were lots of medium-sized dorado and some finicky sailfish. We lost and saw a couple of sails on the reef. Not all reports were good this week but it looks like some cooler water is out there right now that is holding fish. The tuna showed up which clears the slate. My friend had a half dozen 20-30 pound yellowfin and two in the 60-70 pound range. Just ate some seared in soy sauce and sesame oil – Oh so good! We will be out tomorrow to try to find some of our own.
While walking on the beach today, I started to think about the inshore fall fishing coming back. Sure enough, I saw some bait near the surface, one pelican diving, and then a few skipjack started boiling. It’s still a little early, but I bet the bait and the inshore fishing will slowly start to pick up. I heard again of some very nice-sized dorado being caught in the bay. We’re only two weeks away from the Labor Day Tournament. After that, I’m headed to the mountains. I’ll stop thinking about trout though the second I see tuna!
