CRRIFS – Our Coopers Hawk was Ready to GoWe had a Coopers Hawk as a patient at CRRIFS since mid-March. He was rescued in Guaymas and came to us very weak and unable to fly. We are happy to report that he rehabilitated nicely and after a fly test, we were able to release him. He was anxious to get back home as he is a migratory species. It was time for him to fly the coop. If you would like to help more wildlife, please call or text us at 622-152-9934. We would love to show you our Wildlife Rescue Center and our other recuperating patients we are caring for. CRRIFS – We are much more than turtles! |
Fishing, Birding & Diving Reports
Fishing ReportThe heat is here! Water temps are climbing with marlin and dorado already spotted. The forecast shows some lingering winter winds, but there are a lot of calm warm days in the forecast. The clarity continues to improve and maybe the tons of seaweed that will break off for the next few months will have some worth. For the moment it is a nuisance. We continued to find some nice yellowtail in close trolling. Trolling was difficult with the seaweed, but we didn’t have any luck with jigs or poppers. The fish sounded like they were in close hitting poppers at the Island. One report was that they were a few miles down the Reef, and it sounded like trolling and jigging was working too. The Island was definitely worth the trip with most days being glass calm. by Bryan Replogle, Team Margarita Sportfishing, repsilon@aol.com |
Birding ReportHola Birding Enthusiasts, We had 10 for our outing last week and headed to the Rincón del Ensueño development. We checked on the Least Grebe nests but were unable to spot chicks there or on the parent’s back where they are carried for the first several days after hatching. Maybe next time as they are due any day. We saw Wilson’s, Orange-crowned and Black-throated Gray Warblers; the Ladder-backed Woodpecker; Warbling Vireo; and 4 beautiful blue Lazuli Buntings. They were clearly visible but too far away for good photos. We had 19 species. Afterwards we went to the Little Cactus Restaurant for a late breakfast. My Bird of the Week is the Warbling Vireo. Its Spanish name is Vireo Gorjeador. You may never have heard of Vireos. I had not until I started to seriously bird. They are small to medium-sized passerine birds found in the new world and Southeast Asia. Passerines are perching birds which includes about 50% of all species. Within that huge category, Vireos are in the family Vireronidae. They are about the size of warblers but with thicker bills, shorter tails and a rather plain gray/green coloring. Males and females are alike in plumage. Several species of Vireo winter in our area. The Warbling Vireo, however, winters to the south of us and migrates through our area in the spring. We are seeing it at all the settlement ponds right now and I spotted one in a tree at my friend’s house in lower Villa Hermosa this week. They spend the summer throughout most of the United States and Western Canada and forage for insects high up in deciduous forest habitat, usually near water. Since our trees are shorter, they are easier to spot here. If you have trees in your yard, I encourage you to look for them. They are one of the easiest Vireos to identify with that thick white eyebrow. The birding group will meet this coming Thursday, April 25 at 8:00am at the Mariscos Esterito Cafe located at the end of San Carlos Bay near the fish camp and across from the Red Cross station. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. The outing will last until about 11:00am and we go out to lunch afterwards. If you have any questions, sightings to share, or comments, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com. I wish you happy birding wherever you are. by Mary Tannehill |
Diving Report
A group of divers explored the wreck last Saturday and found some organism are moving in already. As we saw with the other wreck, it doesn’t take long for ocean critters to find new homes on these artificial reefs. Visibility last Saturday was about 20 feet with water temperatures still very cool, about 60 degrees F at 57 feet. As the water warms, this will be a nice destination for a snorkel. And, if you are a diver, book a dive trip now to see the “before.” In just a few months, it will be a living reef with much to explore. by Annette Felix, José Luis Chavez, and Feliza Rios; photos by Paco Padilla |
