Desalination Plant Planned in Guaymas

Mayor_GuaymasThe Mexican National Water Commission is considering three desalination plants in the country, including one in Guaymas. According to the Conagua website, the desalination projects would be in La Paz, Guaymas and Rosarito. The goal is for the Guaymas desalination plant to service the towns of Hermosillo, Guaymas and Empalme.
Congressman Rogelio Diaz-Brown agrees that desalination is the solution to the problem of long-term water and said the National Water Commission has a budget to begin work on a desalination plant in Sonora. Meanwhile, in the 2010 budget there are funds for the creation of wells to address water problems in the short and medium terms.

The Mayor of Guaymas, Cesar Lizarraga Hernandez, also considers it viable and necessary to build a desalination plant in Guaymas. To that end, two companies are currently doing studies in order to present work proposals to the City.

Around San Carlos & Guaymas in Pictures

Guaymas then and now. These photos were taken from the Guaymas malecón. The malecón is a beautiful and easy walk. Park in the new large parking lot by the Fisherman’s statue. A nice short walk is to the fountain and back, but you can also turn left past the fish processing plant and continue down a long seaside walkway. You’ll pass colorfully painted fishing pangas and dozens of birds, especially pelicans. The boulevard is divided by palm trees. At the end of the malecón is a water-front restaurant (if anyone has eaten there, please let us know if you recommend it).

Where are the Fish?

A beautiful week on the water. The seas have been nice and calm. It seems the small yellowtail are up every morning, but they haven’t been biting as well the last few days. Boats that are jigging in the morning are getting some fish. The jigging bite seems to turn on later in the morning and we had some epic days. At times we had triple hookups and were getting fish every time we dropped down. Most of the fish are from 6-11 pound range with the occasional 14 pound yellowtail. We have been catching the fish off of San Antonio in 160-180 feet of water. Some good bottomfish are still coming in and there have been some good catches the last few days at San Pedro with some larger fish. Early in the week my friend saw two marlin jumping! The water is definitely warm this year.

Looking forward to the couples fishing tournament this Saturday the 13th. Hope to see you out there!

What’s Happening in the Water?

Johan Broere’s Dive Report

flounder

We enjoyed some beautiful days in the water again this week. This unseasonal warm water is a real treat. 68-70° F at 60 feet deep and as warm as 72° F in the shallow coves. Even though the visibility was around 20 feet we did see a few flounder.   Unfortunately some jelly-stingers rode in with the warm water. I did not see any jelly fish, just the stingers. It’s best to bring some alcohol or vinegar along to apply to the irritated area. We were able to avoid most of those stingers and did get in some clamming. The days are getting longer and warmer so between dives we work on our sun tans. Come on down and enjoy.

Help Rescate – so it’s there when you need help

Rescate San CarlosIf you needed emergency care while in San Carlos, who would you call? Where would you go?

Rescate provides emergency first aid medical care and ambulance service to San Carlos residents and visitors alike.

Rescate is a not-for-profit organization. It is entirely self-supporting and is funded through memberships, donations and the activities of the Rescate auxiliary. Several of Rescate’s big fundraising events are coming up, and Rescate needs your help.

Help Rescate by:

  • Donating kitchen gadgets. Have you somehow collected 9 cheese knives and you really only use 3? Do you have some placemats and napkins still perfectly good, except that you’re tired of them?  How about jars of your famous jelly or pickles–can you spare a few? Go through your drawers and see what you can find – every bottle opener helps.  By Friday February 19th, bring them to Rescate, or call Judi Peek at 226-1216 and she will arrange to pick them up. Items will be sold at Rescate’s Annual Bazaar at the Marketplace Booth.
  • Making baked goods like bread, cake and muffins for the Bake Sale at Rescate’s Annual Bazaar. Call Becky at 226-1692 or Beverly at 226-0628 if you’d like to bake something.
  • Donating gently used clothes. By Friday February 19th, bring them to Rescate, or call Judi Peek at 226-1216 and she will arrange to pick them up. Items will be sold at Rescate’s Annual Bazaar at the Boutique.

Save The Date: February 20 to browse through local art, crafts, clothes, baked goods and other fun things. At the Seascape Plaza (just past Champs) - Note new venue, and do NOT go to the church plaza.  See you at the Bazaar!

Emergency? Call 226-0911

Save The Date: February 28, 2010 from noon to 2:00pm at Los Jitos Plaza.

What’s Up with Mark Mulligan?

mark mulliganHello San Carlos, Mark Mulligan here….me and my gang sure do miss you guys! But we’re having a great time down here on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and enjoying every minute of this “adventure”, as we call it. Seems every day we go someplace new, see something we’ve never seen, or just spend time together whenever I’m not off singing. I know many of you have heard that we’re living in Playa del Carmen or Cancun, but the truth is we’re in a little town between the two called Puerto Morelos, a very mellow little spot that my San Carlos friends would really like, with gorgeous beaches and a slow pace you don’t find in either of the towns I mentioned above. And the places I’m singing at are really nice too, such as the beautiful Ceiba del Mar Resort right here in town….Akumal Beach Resort about 70 kilometers to the south….Hotel Posada Amor, the oldest hotel in Puerto Morelos….and the quirky ex-pat haven of Paamul, about 12 miles south of Playa del Carmen. Snuck in a few songs up at Margaritaville in Cancun too. This week I’m heading off to Belize, where I’ll join up with my “Mulligan’s IslandFest” compadre Kelly McGuire AND see some of you guys too!

We’re excited about the baby, and like many of you don’t hide the fact that we’re hoping for a girl this time. Marcos and Luis are hoping for a sister too. We’ve got our first visit with the doctor up in Cancun this week. Elsa can’t wait.

As for our plans after that, we really have none for the moment. Until having kids, I’ve always “winged it” in life and one of the things I like right now is simply enjoying one moment at a time without planning for the next. Eventually we’ll get around to that, but right now I just want to experience all I can with my family and rack up as many lifelong memories as possible. I continually think of this as the “Life Is Short” tour. That truly is the reason we left the security of home and relatively safe income for the unknown, and risk having to start all over in a place where nobody knows me from Adam. I love the challenge and I love the thrill when it all comes together. And most of all, I love that we get to do this together. Elsa and I are so grateful to God for this opportunity and to you guys for your support from back home.

One of these days we’ll pull back into San Carlos with a whole bunch of stories to tell! In the meantime, I’m sharing some of those stories daily on my website. Some of you guys have already visited, like my loyal friends Bruce and Giggles who have been GREAT roadies for my first month here. Others have already got trips scheduled. Nothing is better than seeing the faces of my San Carlos family. No matter how much we’re enjoying this trip, there’s simply nobody like the San Carlos gang. It’ll make the day we come home really special, seeing all you guys again.

And finally, speaking of my San Carlos family, I’ve been keeping up on all that’s going with the Castaway Kids and wow, it really is unbelievable all that the volunteers are doing. Thanks to Terry Lynn Challis and all the Castaway Kids gang for not just keeping the group going, but for taking it to new levels!

I’ve got today off, so we’re off to see one of this area’s famous “cenotes” (an underground cave and river), then later on tonight we’re meeting up with many of the locals for a bonfire on the beach. I’ll break out the guitar and send you guys a long distance dedication from 3500 kilometers away, letting these folks down here know all about “My Kind of People”. God bless you guys and thanks for all your good wishes and support!

Mark, Elsa, Marcos and Luis

Wednesday Night Movie at the Yacht Club, The Hurt Locker.

Just nominated for 9 Oscars, including ‘Best Picture’!

Reviewers say that The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad, who volunteer to challenge the odds. This film is better than any documentary on the Iraq war. It’s so real, it’s scary. Well-written, well-acted, well-directed. This film will grab you by the back of the neck and shake you. Not for the timid, but an Oscar-worthy cinema experience.

Watch a preview.

Doors open at 6:00pm for hamburgers by the Yacht Club. Movie starts at 7:00pm.

And remember, free popcorn.

Carnaval de Guaymas 2010

Carnaval Guaymas 2010 FlyerFebruary 11th to 16th is Carnaval de Guaymas 2010!

There will be four days of colorful parades featuring decorated floats, brightly masked and elaborately costumed people, marching bands, and pulsating dance music. Plus food and beer stands and elevated stages that will feature various live concerts. Thousands of onlookers, both young and old, will dance, cheer and throw confetti along the parade route, then make their way to the Three Presidents Plaza where the party will continue with more live bands, food, drink and carnival rides.
