Bicentennial of Mexican Independence
In Mexico, various festivities occur in September. It is known as Mes de la Patria, or the month of our nation. The main event is on September 15th-16th, when Mexicans celebrate their nation’s independence from Spanish rule.
In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell of his little church, in Dolores, Guanajuato, Mexico, and rallied his congregation to fight for liberty. Father Hidalgo gave a speech that is now known as the “Grito de Delores”, in which he proclaimed “Viva Mexico” and “Viva la independencia!” This was the catalyst for the country’s bloody eleven-year War of Independence. It is the moment that is commemorated and re-enacted in every plaza or zócalo in Mexico every 15th of September.
In preparation for the fiesta, Guaymas will be brightly decorated in green, white and red. On the evening of Wednesday, September 15th, there will be food stalls, children’s rides and live music in and around Plaza de los Tres Presidentes in Guaymas. The festivities will culminate when a government official gives the grito or cry of independence and the crowd returns the cry, remembering Father Hidalgo’s famous call to arms that eventually led to the liberty of a nation. On Independence Day, September 16th, there will be a short parade.
On September 15 and 16, don your charros, china poblanas or anything red, white and green, head to Guaymas’ main plaza and help Mexico celebrate its independence.

San Carlos’ five-day forecast is for sun or partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low to mid 30s. Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page (including Storm Pulse and NOAA graphics for the area).

Fishing Report
Things sure heated up for the Labor Day Tournament. At one point yesterday, 18 boats were all fishing a couple square mile section with great action. It doesn’t get much better, unless you’re Team Kryptonite pulling their third straight win! Twenty-four boats came out with 100 anglers to catch 102 billfish. A good number of the billfish were striped marlin, but I heard of a number of blue marlin released in the 200-350 pound range. The largest two weighed were 210 and 224 pounds. There were a good number of smaller dorado, but only five fish made it over the 18-pound mark with the biggest at 42 pounds. Two wahoo were weighed and only one underweight tuna. Personally I think the wahoo and tuna are down deep waiting for cooler weather.
There are some big marlin swimming around, and September is the month that they really start to show up. One boat caught one just a hundred yards from the Island yesterday. They could be anywhere. There haven’t been many billfish in close this year, but that could change. Look for the dorado action to get even better with a few more big ones showing up, and the small ones getting a little more ‘keepable’. Later in the month, expect some reports of tuna to begin.
In close, Team Margarita Sportfishing found excellent action for several four-hour charters. I think the massive school of smaller dorado we found headed north up past Deer Island and La Manga. Other schools will be moving through with some taking up more temporary residence. They, along with many small sierra and tons of skipjack, were feeding on acres of small baitfish. They better stay in close though before the big black marlin start to show up and turn them into bait. We did find some larger dorado around Doble Point outside the harbor and off of San Antonio in the 4-7 pound range. They are good fun on light spinning gear. There are also schools of the smaller dorado roaming around farther out under the white birds. The skipjack can become a nuisance for the first few miles offshore. Don’t troll right through them and you can sometimes get the larger dorado hanging with them.
After three days of all-day sweating through my shirt, I need a break. I’m grabbing my wife, our four-legged kids, and my fly rod and heading to the mountains. Till next time.
tight lines,
Bryan Replogle repsilon@aol.com

PADI Project Aware San Carlos 2010
On September 19th, beginning at 10:00am, divers and shoreline volunteers are needed to help clean the beaches.
San Carlos’ diving community and local residents are being called upon to celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 19.
Jorge E. Beltrán needs your help to target underwater and shoreline debris in San Carlos. Project AWARE Foundation coordinates underwater clean-up events and urges divers and volunteers to jump into their wetsuits, pull on their gloves and make a splash for trash!
“Project AWARE is pleased to support PRO-DIVERS Dive Center. Divers are the guardians of our underwater environments – they often see first hand the effects of marine debris on our delicate ecosystem. This event is the largest single day volunteer event on behalf of our underwater environment. “It’s a fantastic example of how people can work together to take action,” said Jenny Miller Garmendia, Director of Project AWARE Foundation.
“It’s not too late to get involved,” said Jorge. “If you’re interested in participating, please call me at 622-120-5854. And you don’t have to be a diver to get involved. Bring your friends and family along and help make clean waters a reality.”
Jorge will provide drinks (purifed water & soft drinks), garbage bags, prizes for the team who collects the most trash, Project AWARE Certificates and lots of fun.
Volunteers will help clean San Fransisco, Los Algadones and Piedras Pintas beaches. All volunteers should meet Jorge at 10:00am at Las Palapitas Restaurant on San Fransisco beach in San Carlos. There is plenty of free parking. From there, participants will be bussed to one of the three clean-up locations. Volunteers should bring their own gloves, extra water, sun screen, etc.
All divers need to confirm participation before the day and will be required to bring their diver certification card, fins, mask, snorkel, weights, regulators, BCD, tanks and sign an Underwater Liability Release Form.
If any businesses can contribute prizes, or help sponsor the event, please contact Jorge.
