Las Madrinas de Los Huerfanos (The Godmothers of the Orphans)

las madrinas

Ladies, we would love to have you come and check us out. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the clubhouse at Tecalai Park. Membership is open to any lady, and guests are always welcome. We have a lot of fun and socializing after business is taken care of, as we play Bunco and enjoy treats provided by the hostesses of the month. The planning and carrying out of the yearly Christmas Party for the children is always a high point of each season.

“Las Madrinas” was formed nearly 40 years ago for the purpose of helping, physically and financially, the Hogar Paz y Bien orphanage in Guaymas. This is a very comfortable home for needy or orphaned children, located on Calle 13, Avenue XV, Number 406. Las Madrinas have met our self-imposed monthly obligation to Hogar Paz y Bien without fail since our inception, as well as many “extras” when particular needs arose.

Funds are raised through yearly dues, donations, and our Bunco games at each meeting. We have also published a book of recipes gathered from members and friends in San Carlos which went into its’ fourth printing in 2009, and the earnings from the weekly bingo games at Club Deportivo also go to the orphanage. All funds are deposited to a bank account to be used to help as needed, with utilities, repairs, appliances, clothing, shoes, school supplies and the yearly Christmas Party. Last year when the sisters mentioned some of the children couldn’t see well, we funded an eye clinic for them. Several members teach English to the children on a regular basis. We’ve taken care of repairs, fixed the kitchen, and purchased tables and chairs for classes, as well as donating dictionaries, crayons and other school supplies.

We are currently in the planning stages for the Christmas Party. Our next meeting on Tuesday, December 7, at 12:30pm, will be spent sorting and cleaning donated toys, as well as gathering toys brought by members. We’ll have a wrapping party on Tuesday, December 14 at 10:00am with each member bringing a plate of “finger foods” which we can all share after we have wrapped all the gifts. The party at the orphanage for the children will be on Thursday, December 16 – we take hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks for the children, as well as pinatas and candy, and Santa comes with us and calls each child by name and gives him or her a bag of gifts to unwrap. The children have a blast and we have a ball watching them! Please come and join us. You’ll be a blessing to the children and they will be a joy and a blessing to you!

Dive Report

dive reportThis week we had some seasonal wind blowing through. In the late afternoons, the northwest wind can certainly whip up the white caps. Unfortunately, that does not help visibility and at times it was reduced to 5 feet. Most of the time it was better though and locally we had 20 feet and at the Island 30 feet. When visibility is reduced, I like to find some rocks and look for the smaller stuff. The things you normally swim over are just beautiful when you give them a closer look. We had 68 degrees F at the Island at 40 feet and locally 70 degrees F in shallow waters and 64 F at 80 feet. We are looking at a fantastic week ahead of us and the wind is supposed to lay down a bit. Come on down and enjoy.

Fishing Report

fishing reportWell, summer is still hanging in there. We were out 15-25 miles on Thursday catching about ten dorado up to 20 pounds. It seemed like things cooled off and all the marlin surfed out of here this last weekend with the winds, but the satellite images today show the warm water is almost coming back. We also saw some tuna boils when we were out there, so you never know. Our friends next to us caught a 250 pound Blue marlin and a couple of sailfish. We had an excellent week of fishing, catching an average of about two billfish a day. There were lots of striped marlin but they were a few miles offshore. One day my father and his friend loaded the cooler with bonita, yellowtail, and sierra, only to then go and catch five marlin! A few nice cabrilla are in close and I’m sure the Island from the old lighthouse to the north tip is loaded with bonita. The yellowtail are off and on, but it looked like a bonanza out there on Monday morning. We should be trying the Island later in the week for the real big ones. My fingers are still crossed for a good tuna run though.

Henry Jessen Pedersen

henry Jessen pedersenHenry Jessen Pedersen passed peacefully on June 28, at age 87. He was born in Thisted, Denmark to Ejner Pedersen and Ane Marie Jessen on March 17, 1923.

Henry came to the United States with the Danish Gymnastics Team after WWII. The team performed in 43 states, Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Europe. Returning to the U.S., he taught gymnastics while studying landscape architecture at Iowa State University. Upon completion, he moved to Denver and landscaped one of the nation’s first shopping centers, Cherry Creek. In early 1950, Henry came to Aspen to ski and there settled his own roots.

Henry was the first landscape architect in Aspen. With permits from the Forest Service, he dug up aspen trees and wildflowers and planted them for property owners throughout town. These native transplants needed very little water; the town was getting greener and more shaded and Henry’s business flourished. He served on the Pitkin County Planning Commission, The Parks Association and the Music Associates of Aspen. He volunteered for the Aspen Music Tent/campus. Henry proudly collaborated with Herbert Bayer in landscaping Aspen Meadows and The Aspen Institute. He taught gymnastics at Aspen High School and skiing at Highlands.

Henry retired in 1990 and spent his time traveling with his wife, Louise Frisby Pedersen. They lived in San Carlos, Mexico in the winter and Carbondale in the summers. Louise died from cancer in 2000. Henry is survived by his brother, Tage Pedersen; his children, Mia (Jason) Barnard and Jess (Nina) Pedersen. He is also survived by grandchildren Daisy and Pepper Barnard, and Olivia and Oskar Pedersen.

A celebration of life will be held at Henry’s house at 325 Caracol Peninsula on Tuesday November 23 at 4:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you plant a tree to spread his spirit!

kids choirLOS NINOS VIOLINISTAS DE GUAYMAS: Congratulations to the young musicians that performed a dress rehearsal and audition on stage at Bonifacio’s Cotton Club last Sunday night. These violinists were multi-talented with different scores of contemporary and classical symphonic sounds. We are blessed in our small pueblito to have so much talent…and the violins were half as tall as the kids! The girls and boys are aged six to thirteen.

The main ballroom at the Cotton Club was filled with jubilant parents, aunts, uncles, primas y primos. The kids will perform again center stage at Bonifacio’s on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25 (more details next week). Everyone is welcome. Make reservations now and if you have an old used instrument to donate, bring it along!

Thanks to Prosperos Reyes, Laurence Cuevas, Lynn Rutherford and Mara Gutierrez for organizing this event and to the gracious host Francisco Torres.

Other music news: Club de Capitanes will feature Steve Smersh and Elba Santiago as a duet singing a cornucopia of traditional and classical music on Friday nights at 6:00pm. Violinist Sandra Rodriquez will host a Mariachi evening at Banana’s on Fridays at 8:00pm.
