San Carlos.tv Video of the Week

sancarlos.tv OrcaVideo of the Week: Las Barajitas Canyon & Orcas.

We were looking for pumas in Canyon Las Barajitas and ran into a pod of Orcas feeding on manta rays right in San Carlos in front of La Manga. It was a truly special day in San Carlos when we hiked one of the most beautiful canyons in the area and then had an up close and very personal encounter with Orcas.

A day like today reminds me of why I live here.

Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and Tai Chi

energy zoneYoga for all Ages classes will begin on November 8 at 9:15am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at The Energy Zone. This is Hatha/Vinyasa Flow style yoga for all ages, experience levels, and abilities. The class focus is on breath with movements and on students with limited range of mobility to improve flexibility and joint motion. The poses are adapted to meet the needs of beginners, intermediate, and advance students in the same class.

The Energy Zone has also started classes in Zumba and Tai Chi and is continuing to offer the popular Pilates classes. See the calendar below for dates and times.

Classes are 50 pesos per class, except Tai Chi which is 10 pesos. The Energy Zone is located behind Barracuda Bob’s in Marina San Carlos. Find it on a map.

Kristina Ladau offers Hatha Yoga at 9:00am at the Golf/Country Club. This class is a total body stretch, focusing on breathing techniques and relaxation, suitable for beginner / intermediate level students.

Dive Report

dive reportSome of the current lines were red as blood (see photo to left). The Red Tides can come and go very quickly. I did not see any in the coves, but they could have been there. Along with this red algae, there was also some green algae. Needless to say, the visibility varied greatly between sites and what time of day you were there. We had 30 feet visibility on Friday but only 10 feet on Sunday. The dive shops must be selling Navigation courses like hot cakes. Lalo Cove was 63 degrees F on Friday and 68 F on Sunday. So be prepared and bring the thicker suits. The San Carlos harbor was pretty busy and lots of people enjoyed the ocean. We had some beautiful days.

Lots of bubbles,

Fight Night at Marina Cantina

marina cantina fight nightOn November 13, Marina Cantina will be showing the PPV event Pacquiao vs Margarito with the undercard staring at 7:00pm.

Pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao is set to fight Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito for the vacant super-welterweight title on November 13, 2010 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

It will be an action-filled fight come November 13 as Pacquiao and Margarito will give the audience their money’s worth. This will be the first fight of Manny Pacquiao since winning a congressional slate in the Province of Sarangani in the Philippines, and it is perhaps the first time that an elected official will be fighting in a high-profile boxing match. Antonio Margarito, on the other hand, will also be fighting again since losing the world boxing title to Sugar Shane Mosley.

The fight is also being shown at the San Carlos Plaza Hotel.

Castaway Kids

tiangiusOn behalf of the Castaway Kids organization, I’d like to thank everybody who contributed to our 1st Tianguis which was held Saturday at Bahia Storage. It was a big success!! We had a nice, shady area to display our treasures, thanks to Paulo and Don at their newly remodeled mini-storage and covered boat, car and RV storage facility in the Bahia. Siesta Realty contributed beverages and snacks for our buyers and workers and we thank all of them for their support. Friends and members loaned us their clothes racks, tables and other items we were lacking to pull this off. Of course, there are lots of folks to thank for the multiple donated items. We sold all but a couple of pieces of furniture, including bikes, a kayak, a sailing dinghy, sporting equipment like golf clubs, a fly fishing rod, snorkel gear and lots of clothes!!

Members, non-members, student sponsors and even one of our sponsored students, Osvaldo, showed up to help and I thank them all. They made quick work of the set-up and take-down.

Now, we’re looking for new donations for another tianguis sometime after the holiday season. Keep Castaway Kids in mind when you’re cleaning out your bodegas or closets or even if you have an RV you’d like to donate. There is a very happy man in San Jose living in a donated trailer which was delivered post-Jimena. It’s tax deductible!

Of course, thanks to all those treasure hunters who came and spent their pesos and dollars. There were lots of smiling folks walking out with all the good deals they found. What a giving community we live in!

Entertainment

Eric HollandMore venues have added gigs this week.

La Palapa’s owner Raphael (best Greek salad in Sonora) will be starting his upcoming schedule this Wednesday with Luna, a five piece rhythm-classic rock band playing favorites in English, Spanish and por supuesto traditional Mexican songs. Danny Moreno will take the Palapa’s beachfront stage this Thursday with his eclectic variety of bilingual favorites. Fridays, the band “On the Road” will bring San Carlos a new sound, and Saturdays will be Eric Holland. He is returning to La Palapa with his combination of classic rock, Mexican music including Mana, western ballads and of course his original songs featured on his new, third CD: “Borders Battles and Beers”.

Speaking of Danny Moreno, a lovely Sunday morning may be spent by all listening to his sounds at Marina Terra outdoor brunch overlooking the Marina. I hope Danny’s presentations this week will not be interrupted by his new baby which is expected in eight days!

Mike’s “Club de Capitanes” has started its fourth annual year of outdoor music with the old-time films of Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle….Accompanied by Omar on his piano catching all the trips, stumbles and falls. This happens every Monday at sunset, with food and popcorn served outside. Live music is every weekend at 8:00pm, including the third annual “Open Mic” every Sunday at sunset.

Francisco at Bonifacio’s Cotton Club will announce his music soon which will include a Salsa Night. Other nights will feature Omar on piano and acoustic-Spanish guitar, and Eric Holland on acoustic solo guitar, with violinist Sandra Rodriguez helping out a few nights a month.

Look for the free “Kids Music Concert” (out of Guaymas) on the 25th of November at Bonifacio’s.

Musically Yours, Eric Holland

See the calendar of events for times and venues this Fall. Musicians and venue owners please submit times and dates for your gigs to info@whatsupsancarlos.com.

Five Palms update

5 Palms Restaurant San Carlos Mexico

Dear customers and friends,

We are excited to tell you that the Five Palms restaurant will be expanding soon. We have recently leased the building next door (the old supermarket) in order to build a private function room which could hold as many as 100 people and we are also discussing adding some other interesting options inside the new premises.

Five Palms is open 365 days a year from 11:00am to 2:00am (including December 24, 25, 31 and January 1).

We endeavor to adhere to the original concept of the Five Palms – which is to provide good food at reasonable prices, ensuring excellent quality and improving the standards and service for our clientele. We are committed to making our discerning customers always feel comfortable and welcome.

What are our plans in the coming weeks?

We are going to be celebrating Thanksgiving night with a set price RSVP evening consisting of live music and a traditional turkey dinner including champagne and wine.

In January, we are adding a custom mesquite wood oven in the main dining area to make delicious additional special items available and served directly to your table.

We are adding Italian and Syrian dishes to our menu that will provide you with a variety of new gastronomic options.

We will be introducing our new VIP card which will give customers discounts not only in San Carlos but also in any of the following restaurants:

In Hermosillo: Horno de Castilla, Le Rendez Vous (french restaurant) partnership with Le Rendez Vous from Tucson, and Five Palms.

In Ciudad Obregon: Horno de Castilla, Five Palms, and Savannah.

So my friends, I’m happy to share all these exciting future plans with you. Please email me at aidinino@yahoo.com with any comments or suggestions. Your email will be treated with the strictest confidence. Please remember that it is in your interests to advise me about anything, so that I can personally continue to make the improvements necessary and keep Five Palms as one of your favorite restaurants.

Thank You,
Nino Aidi
