Navy Day (Día de la Marina)
On June 1, Mexico will honor those who make their living on the sea, an important celebration in our seaport. This year, President Felipe Calderón will visit Guaymas to help celebrate Navy Day.
For security reasons, the exact details of the celebration have not yet been released. However, traditionally, the celebration starts the night before (May 31st) with the crowning of the Navy’s queen, followed by a torchlight parade down Serdan, ending at the Three Presidents Plaza. The torch parade commemorates the historical custom, which began prior to the town having a lighthouse, of the fishermen’s wives going to the shore at night with lit torches to guide their husbands safely home.
On the morning of June 1, government and military representatives will gather to honor the flag and read the President’s speech. This year, we are honored to hear the speech delivered by President Calderon himself. Flowers are often thrown from shore in memory of sailors, both civilian and military, whose lives have been lost in the performance of their duties. Performances by the State’s band liven up the celebration.
As specifics for this year’s celebration become known, we’ll update the website. |

If you are a gardener, you know that within a very short time of planting a single zucchini seed, there will be hundreds barging out of your garden! By August you will be bargaining with people to take them off your hands. Read more. |
