Castaway Kids

castaway kidsSanta Clara Family gets new house because of generosity of Doug Marshall’s friends & family!

by Terry Challis

Carmona and Silveria were living with their 4 children in a shack made of a variety of materials with a dirt floor and no running water. Dave Keilholtz, head of our Construction Committee, found a partially completed brick house at a very reasonable price just a few blocks away in Santa Clara. Lionel Charret from Mi Casa Su Casa Realty did some research and prepared a contract for purchase of the house from the Ejido; then the Construction Crew got to work putting in wiring and plumbing and doors and windows. On May 1, a group of Castaway Kids volunteers helped the family move into their new house. Assistant Treasurer, Alison Boyle, even made curtains for the newly installed glass windows. Alison reported that 11 year old Griselda is in charge of doing the dishes and you should have seen her eyes light up when she saw a sink with running water in their new kitchen.

A couple of days later, I accompanied a few of the Construction Committee members to the house to take a kitchen cabinet and a cabinet for the bedroom, along with some donated kitchen dishes and other kitchen items. Silveria was in town shopping and there was a neighbor’s girl there babysitting. I had found among our donations a couple of stuffed animals and a plastic bag full of hair doo-dads, sunglasses and other items I thought might appeal to an 11 year old. Griselda and the babysitter sat on the bed going through the bag and trying on each and every item in there. Two year old Victor picked out the blue stuffed bear and that left the big floppy stuffed dog for the 1 year old twin girls, Sinahi and Nohemi.

As we were leaving I said to Griselda, “Your mom is going to come home to a big surprise, huh?” I gave her a thumbs up and she reciprocated with 2 thumbs up. We coaxed a wave out of Victor who was still holding onto his bear with the other arm.

Silveria told the volunteers that she didn’t know how they’d ever repay Castaway Kids for this wonderful new house. Rosa Keilholtz explained to her the idea of paying it forward, “One day you may see somebody in need of help, and we just hope you will be in a position to give it.”

This gift was made possible by the generous donations of friends and family of one of Castaway Kids’ founding members, Doug Marshall, in his memory, after he left us way too soon this past March. There are still funds left in this account to help another family or two. Stay tuned! A big “thank you” to all who contributed their money, their time and their efforts to help this family.

CASTAWAY KIDS CONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE IS LOOKING FOR AN ENCLOSED TRAILER (12′ +/-) TO USE AS AN EQUIPMENT/TOOL TRAILER FOR THEIR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS NEXT YEAR. DOES SOMEBODY OUT THERE HAVE ONE THAT THEY’RE NOT USING — TAX DEDUCTION ANYONE? Contact castawykids@yahoo.com.

Fishing Report

fishing reportFirst, sorry to my readers for missing a few weeks. I guess that I was either not fishing enough … or I was out fishing. We’ve been out this week a couple of times to the Island. Both days had good bites, with the action picking up in the afternoon. The first day saw us catching consistent fish on the jigs just off the south end of the Island. There were a few pangas (for about the first time I’ve seen this year!) pulling in a decent catch. The next day we worked hard for a few fish, losing our fair share. It was looking like a slow day. The other boats hadn’t caught a fish and had all left. Then the fish started popping up far off the east side. We marked bait and caught one red snapper in close. We tried a little farther down and hooked up on the jig. Then fish started to come up all over … barracuda and yellowtail everywhere chasing down the anchovies. We had mild success tossing small jigs at the fish, but they were focused on the real thing. We picked up more fish jigging, and once again were cleaning fish all the way home. A few boats have headed south to find small dorado. I did hear of one marlin released. We saw one at the Island, but all we had to throw at it was a big jig. The water is attempting to warm with the north-west winds. The blow early in the week cooled the water off over ten degrees. Strong tides, cold water under the surface, and the water is turning-over. We might see some warmer water within the week. For now, sleep in, jig your arms off, go buy some of the small jigs at Walmart, and go catch the last yellowtail of the year.

Spice it up?

spice nutritionby Kristina Ladau

Nutrition in spices? You bet! One of the simplest ways to add more nutrition and antioxidant power to your diet is through the power of spices. Using as little as ½ teaspoon of certain spices can help lay a healthy nutritional foundation rich in antioxidants.  We most often think of fruits and vegetables as having large amounts of antioxidants, but if you’re not adding spices to your recipes on a regular basis, it may be time to start. Read more.
