Tianguis

Treasures await you at the tianguis to benefit Castaway Kids on Saturday, March 5th. The tianguis will be open from 8:00am to 12:00pm at the Bahia Storage in San Carlos (map). Members of La Liga de Arte will have arts and crafts for sale.
Paulo Delgado and Don Grant are already accepting your donations at their facilities Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 1:30pm. It’s time to clean out your casitas and bodegas! An open market will be held at the same time. Those participating in the open market can make a donation to Castaway Kids in lieu of an admission fee. Volunteers are needed Thursday and Friday afternoons 3:00pm to 5:00pm to set up prior to the tianguis. If you have tables they can use for displaying the sale items, please bring them. San Carlos All-Stars Concert
The March 9 San Carlos All-Stars Concert is a very special one. The show features the Giacoman Family. Three generations of this immensely talented gene pool will grace the stage with Papa Efrain Giacoman, Uncle, and Sons, everyone’s favorites, The Twins! Violinist/vocalist son, Martin, will be returning after wowing the crowd at January’s guest appearance. Identical twin nieces, Lizet and Lizbeth, will play guitar and sing. This March 9 concert will be the debut of the entertaining (surprise!) grandchildren! The music starts at 5:00pm at Hotel Fiesta (map).
Tickets are only 100 pesos or $8.50 US. Not only will a low priced ticket get you into the show — it is also a ticket for door prizes and a 2-for-1 beverage coupon.
Last month was a SELL-OUT so we recommend folks get their tickets in advance at Barracuda Bob’s, Evie’s, Hotel Fiesta, San Carlos Marketing and Long Realty Seaside. |

The Humble Bean
Beans are a humble vegetable, often considered a poor man’s meat or a vegetarian staple. For many of us, beans are only an occasional food – a side order of beans and rice, black beans scattered on a salad, or a bowl of split pea soup on a cold day. Many people are even surprised that beans are actually a vegetable because they seem to straddle more than one food group – vegetable, protein and carbohydrate.
That combination is exactly why beans qualify as a nutrition superstar. They are high in protein while being packed with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals like their veggie cousins. Add to that a rich complement of complex carbohydrates and fiber, while at the same time being low in fat and sodium. They help lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease, and help to control weight and blood sugar. Which beans are the best to eat? Read more …

Fishing Report
The winter seems relentless and never-ending. Still, we are wearing shorts most days, so who can really complain. I’m dreaming of summer fishing though and we still have a few months to go. Reports have been few as the wind has been up. One boat went over to Tortuga Island 54 miles out for a great catch of large yellowtail and a half dozen medium-sized cabrilla. I didn’t get the report yet on another trip up to San Pedro Martir (85 miles), which always has great fishing. I’ve heard of some improved grouper fishing if you can find a calm day. In-shore the water is still too cool to see too much action. I didn’t hear of any reports from the Island, other than a few “tough day” reports from earlier in the week. I did hear of some medium-sized yellowtail being caught off of San Antonio which is promising news. The bait is plentiful in close, so maybe the fish will show up right out front. They are probably enjoying the break from all the fair weather fishermen at the Island, and frolicking while we sit on shore. Hopefully we’ll see a break in the wind here soon.
A buddy and I headed down to Oviache Reservoir a couple hours away a few days ago. The lake was glass most of the time and the fish were biting good. In a couple of days we caught over fifty bass with a half dozen 3 – 5 pound fish. There were lots of big white pelicans flying around, herons and egrets prowling the shore, and cattle roaming for fresh grass. We were in shorts most of the time and the weather was perfect. The water was even warm enough for my friend to swim in after one lure. It was still too cold for me though! But is wasn’t a bad way to spend a couple of days in February.

Dive Report
For the few divers in town to brave the 57 degrees water, it has been very rewarding these last couple of days. Although visibility was not spectacular, we were more than happy with the 20 feet or more we found. Because of the cold water, big crabs came to the shallow water. Some even walked onto the beach. Two feet of crab legs look very scary to some, but for those people there were the Sea Hares to play with. These are also very interesting creatures and they are soft and cuddly. They have parties where more than fifty make a big ball and roll around on the ocean floor. Of course Sea Hares do not cook as well as crabs. So be brave and come on down.

Fight Night at Marina Cantina!
Saturday March 5 at 8:00pm
Anticipation continues to grow as Saul “El Canelo” Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KO’s) prepares to battle Matthew “Magic” Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KO’s) in a 12 round bout on March 5. The winner will walk away with the WBC Light Middleweight Belt that was vacated when Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao moved to welterweight.
Alvarez, the current WBC Silver Super Welterweight Champion, has steamrolled through his competition on the way to this title shot. The unbeaten 20 year old fighter has won all of his 36 professional bouts with the exception of a single draw in June of 2006 against Jorge Juarez. He packs a powerful punch and has a reputation as a brutal fighter, winning 26 of those contests by knockout.
Countering Alvarez is 29 year old Matthew “Magic “ Hatton, who became a fan favorite by appearing on many undercards of his older brother Ricky Hatton over the years. Like his older brother, Matthew too has had a taste of title success, currently holding the European Welterweight Championship. He won that title by way of a unanimous decision over Gianluca Branco in March of 2010 and has successfully defended that title twice since with victories over Roberto Belge and Yuriy Nuzhnenko. |
