Very Berry!
by Kristina Ladau
Though small in size, berries have BIG health and nutrition benefits. Besides bursting with flavor, the nutrition in these delectable treats comes from phytonutrients – naturally occurring compounds found in plants. These nutrients are most concentrated in the peel or skin of fruits and vegetables, so berries, with their edible skin, are a particularly good source of phytonutrients. These antioxidant properties can help improve immune function and reduce the risk for chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. July is National Blueberry month, so it’s time to start celebrating! Read more and try the Elegant Tri-Berry Recipe. |
Fishing Report
Things are looking good for the 65th annual International Fishing Tournament this July 2nd and 3rd. It should be a busy weekend. This last weekend was busy with lots of boats out. The winds finally died down but morning breezes kept it bearable. It is hot though and we are sweating good at times. Water temps are into the low to mid-80′s, though I read 92 in the marina one morning. On the other side, the water is below 80 in places and the fishing is very good. Some big dorado are still being caught on this side and even a few tuna are showing. Some are decent sized 20 pound fish. I’m still waiting to eat some fresh ahi sashimi though.
The water clarity is clearing quickly and the blue water has pushed in to within a few miles. Inside of the blue water are a lot of small dorado and skipjack. The sailfish were around the color break earlier in the week, but now it seems like the majority are around the reef. The marlin are just beyond and they are jumping everywhere. Even a few blue marlin are showing, but not too many have been caught. I did hear of the first wahoo of the year caught beyond the Island. Most boats are picking up a billfish a day, with a few catching two or three in a day. Some are being caught on lures, but ballyhoo still draws the most strikes. They were biting a little finicky this week, but I think that things are picking up. Looks like a few days of nice weather before a windy weekend. That won’t keep us from fishing though.
tight lines, Bryan Replogle repsilon@aol.com

Close Call at International Space Station
by Mark Morelli of Ocean Camp San Carlos
Yesterday, there was a close encounter with some unidentified “space debris” with the International Space Station. It caused six humans to scramble to the relative safety of some escape pods so that they might survive an impact with an object about the size of a stale bagel in orbit about 230 miles up there above mother earth.
Why all the fuss? Well, here’s the issue: The stale bagel-sized object was traveling at perhaps tens-of-thousands of miles-per-hour, and at that speed an impact could cause a hole about the size of a VW in the Internation Space Station (ISS). Read more and watch a video of NASA during the event. |
Graffiti removal in San Carlos
by Gordon Rector, Rotary Club Of San Carlos
We are happy to report that the Graffiti removal in San Carlos is going very well. All of the Tags have been removed from Beltrones Blvd. from KM-00 to KM-20 at Paradiso. The KM markers from 15 to 20 were unpainted and had a lot of Graffiti on them so we had them painted. The power boxes along side the road were very rusty and double ugly so we had them repainted also as well as the concrete pedestals that had Graffiti Tags on them. The Tags on the directional signs were also cleaned off. The painter who is doing the work for Rotary is Rafael Perez Rivas. His phone number is 044-622-240-7727. He is a very hard worker and is very dependable. If you need some painting done please give him a call.
We are continuing the work of removing other Tags from the Ranchitos area as well as other parts of San Carlos. We could use a little more pesos to complete the work so if you would like to donate please leave the money with Thonda Oliver at Coldwell Banker Encantado Realty on Beltrones Blvd. by the Luis Boat Shop. Her phone number is 226-2003. The Sherwin Williams Paint Store in San Carlos donated 5 gallons of paint and Janey McLean donated 500 Pesos. Thanks to both of them.
The following are pictures showing before and after graffiti removal:
