Fishing Report
The fishing has slowed down a bit, but hopefully they are just saving up for the tournament. I definitely think that the full moon could have been a factor. Especially early and late in the season, there is a good supply of bait to feed on, and it all comes to the surface at night. Fish are still being caught though and even a few small tuna showed. The small ‘football’ sized tuna were caught only four to six miles out. We caught several of our sailfish and some eating-size dorado in close. There are plenty of small skipjack just offshore, some sierra mackerel are starting to show, and small dorado are there too. The bottomfishing is decent right now if you can find a cooperative day. It has been rough all week with southerly winds lasting most of the morning.
On Tuesday, a few large dorado were caught within ten miles, and the action farther out was slower. There are some strong current lines farther out that are starting to contain some good seaweed, but they don’t yet have fish. Maybe when the seas calm down, they will start to produce. The blue water starting about ten plus miles out has a lot of flying fish, but I have yet to see a frigate or dorado chasing them in over several trips. Lots of the fish are concentrated on the other side. Bull dorado weighing up to 50 pounds are being caught and in great numbers. The water is much cooler starting about 45 miles out and I’m sure that the seaweed is thick over there. The water has warmed from 81 to 85 degrees. I even read 90 degrees today in the harbor! The air hasn’t been bad with the breezes. If you’re working though, you’ll easily find yourself in a good sweat right now. Bring extra shirts and plenty of ice water. Get out on the water where it is much cooler than on land. Watch for those tails and make every chance count.
