Navy Day (Dia de la Marina)

Navy day

On June 1, Mexico will honor those who make their living on the sea, an important celebration in our seaport. This year, President Felipe Calderón will visit Guaymas to help celebrate Navy Day.

In anticipation of President Calderón’s arrival, thousands of soldiers and police officers are now in Guaymas and San Carlos.

Starting today, the north and south of Guaymas will have a military presence and, if necessary, discrete filters installed by the Federal Preventative Police, also from today, will be enhanced by the presence of about 80 elements from the capital.

The schedule for the President on Wednesday, June 1 is as follows:

  • 10:00am: President Calderón arrives in Guaymas and goes to the Cruise Terminal to board the boat, Usumacinta.
  • 10:30am: Ceremony in tribute to fallen sailors.
  • 11:05am: Mock attack on six patrol boats with six helicopters. There will be missiles, 70mm rockets and gunfire.
  • 12:35pm: President Calderón will go by helicopter to the new Sports Complex to inaugurate it.
  • 1:10pm: the President will be landing on Miguel Alemán Boulevard, to formally open Expomar (video on Expomar).
  • Then, the Navy Day ceremony will start with the participation of the Secretary of the Navy,  Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza, who will deliver a brief history of the event. The President is scheduled to deliver a 12 to 14 minute speech.
  • At the end of the ceremony, President Calderón will go to the San Jose Bypass to formally open it.

During this stage, lighting will be renewed, and the medians modernized. During the initial meeting of the Board, members spoke of the urgency of improving the urban image of the road, including advertisements and sidewalks. Read the story in El Vigia.
  • According to the local paper, a Japanese firm plans to build a new market and hotel in San Carlos. Details of the exact location are not yet available. Read the story.

Now is the time to stretch beyond your lettuce limitations and begin to enjoy the nutritious benefits of the many varieties of salad greens. Don’t let the low calorie content and high water volume trick you in to thinking there isn’t any nutrition in these bountiful greens. Spring is the perfect time to get acquainted with some of the new kids on the block. Let’s take a field trip beyond iceberg and romaine to learn about all that other leafy stuff you see at the grocery store or in the farmer’s markets. Read more and try the Asian Chicken Salad recipe.

Fishing Report

fishing reportby Bryan Replogle

Things are warming up in San Carlos, but the fishing is still staying cool. Some good reports are trickling in and you never know. I heard of a sardine boat seeing big tuna to the Southeast. There are a few stories being told of big tuna lost and seen this past weekend. The Sailfish and Marlin are here and in decent numbers, but they are very tough to get to bite. Out of 27 boats in the Ladies International Fishing Tournament this last weekend, only eight billfish were caught. Even worse was that only 3-4 dorado made the minimum lowered weight of 12 pounds. The biggest was 16 pounds. There have been dorado up to 30 pounds caught though. A few Blue Marlin are being reported caught. A few yellowtail are still being caught on the South end of the Island. The cabrilla and pargo are in close, and some small Sierra are around now.

Four teams were tied on the first day of the LIFT Tournament, with Dakota and the first fish caught in the lead. Day Two saw Fish Chaser in the lead with a billfish and a dorado. Also seeming to be in the lead was EZ Money with a billfish and a couple of hopefully weigh-able dorado. In the end, Reel Loco caught their second marlin to capture the Crystal Salad Bowl. Many great prizes were awarded and raffled off, and I can still taste that corned beef and BBQ. It was great to see everyone, even though the fishing was discouraging and the seas very uncomfortable. I don’t mind not catching anything when I get to fish with my wife and father-in-law. Coming into the dock on Saturday and Sunday, we sure got a taste of the summer heat. It’s always a lot cooler out on the water!

Winds this week look to be fairly consistently breezy and out of the Northeast. The upper layer is still showing temperatures into the high 70′s, but we may see the cooler water resurface. The fishing is still going to be tough for this weekend’s Rescate Tournament. We will be allowed to use bait in this tournament, so more fish could be caught with this rule. I was able to coax one marlin to pick up my bait twice on Friday. I didn’t rejoice too quickly as it pulled off line for eight seconds … and the hook subsequently pulled. Besides that, 95% plus of the fish we pass won’t even give our spreads a second’s glance. The smaller dorado are thinning out almost thankfully, and it seems that a few larger fish are replacing them. We are all wondering when the big ones will decide to show in better numbers. There aren’t a lot of flying fish, and there is a ton of bait in close. One friend was returning to shore the other evening and saw about twenty billfish and dorado balling up a huge school of bait. None of them would take the lures though.

I was able to get out to Tortuga Island mid-week with my wife, sister, and her husband (mi cunado). The ride was fairly smooth, the tunes playing, and the small dorado almost annoying. I ended up passing a giant old discarded fish box out in the center that I had passed two weeks ago. My comment to the guys that day was that “I’d sure like to find this thing in two weeks!” Sure enough, it had hundreds of dorado under it. We made it to the Island 54 miles out at around 4:00pm to take in a quick snorkel, catch some cabrilla, and watch the sun set over Baja. We anchored up along the cliffs on the south side and slept well. Snorkeling the next morning had all the fish out, and I even saw a Golden Cabrilla. It’s definitely an experience to get out there on to the other side, and the fishing is always rewarding. Lots of whales, dolphin, manta rays, large hammerheads, makos, and more are out there right now, so get out and enjoy the sealife. It’s a beautiful sea, even when those billfish don’t want to bite.
