Wild Bill
Bill has just released his official website. Check it out at www.captwildbill.com. There is good information and a store to purchase “Wild Bill” gear. One unique twist that Bill is doing is looking for a greenhorn deckhand through the website and Facebook. While filming the “After the Catch” episodes in New Orleans, Bill saw the devastation caused by the BP oil spill firsthand. Before returning to San Carlos, Bill made a swing through Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Bill knows the effects all too well, after his personal experience up north with the Exxon Valdez spill. Bill is looking for a capable deckhand who has been affected by the BP oil spill. Details and a short video about the search are in the “Contact Bill” section of his website. News Bites

Mexican Honeymoon in San Carlos
Prior to meeting his future bride, Dick heard of this special area on the Sonoran coastline through some friends in 1963. Based on what he heard, he headed south with his boat and stayed at the historic Playa de Cortez Hotel in Guaymas. An avid fisherman, Dick thoroughly enjoyed his days on the Sea of Cortez with a nice lunch prepared by the hotel. He also recalls the dinner hour at the Cortez as a civilized event when people still “dressed” for dinner. Friday evening was a special event with the presentation of “flaming shrimp” along with lively music and much fanfare. When Dick and Dianne ventured back to Guaymas and San Carlos for their honeymoon in 1969, not much had changed. They divided their stay between a charming room at the Hotel Cortez and then moved on to a bungalow at the only hotel in San Carlos at that time, La Posada. They spent their honeymoon then as many young lovers might today. However, because there were so few people in San Carlos in the 1960s, they were able to picnic on the beach and then enjoy skinny-dipping afterwards! They both recall their honeymoon as very romantic with long stretches of beach all to themselves. Ahhh…amore, amore! After their romantic honeymoon, the newlyweds made an annual trek to San Carlos where they made camp on the gorgeous Algodones beach. Nowadays, Algodones beach has several beautiful hotels, a small home development, and the infamous Soggy Peso Bar. However, for the young campers, the nearest neighbors were the ranchers at the nearby Rancho el Palmar. They were invited several times to enjoy typical Mexican meals with the ranch owner and his family. Before long, they were receiving daily deliveries of cows’ milk to their beachside campsite from the ranch. They remember fondly a group of fisherman who paddled close to shore one evening and serenaded them from their boats. Dick and Dianne’s visits to San Carlos were put on hold for a few years when Dick’s job took them to Singapore. After they returned from their adventures in Asia, they came back to San Carlos and eventually bought a home in the Bahia where they now reside full-time. San Carlos has grown by many thousand people since Dick and Dianne celebrated their honeymoon and there are now several large resorts and hotels that offer romantic wedding and honeymoon packages. However, I am pretty sure they wouldn’t trade their honeymoon experience for anything in the world! by Janey McLean |

Where are the Fish?
The dorado are definitely scarce, though there have been some pockets of fish found. Some boats stumbled upon some fish 26 miles out, catching dorado, sailfish, and striped marlin in a pocket of water with flying fish. I think even one tuna was found. A few boats have reported some exceptional catches of large dorado north of Tortuga and all the way up to San Martir Island. You’ll need a fast boat, or to fish all day, to fish areas 55 to 65 miles out! Hopefully these fish will travel a little closer to our side later in the year. In close I have not noticed any activity along the shoreline. That hasn’t seemed to stop some people from trying their handlines to get at least a little fish for ceviche. There are some sierra and small dorado in the bay, but I haven’t heard of any exceptional catches. Some bottomfish are out there if you can find fishable conditions to drop deep and bare the heat of a calm day. With the positive reports that we had last weekend, hopefully we’ll see some fish brought in during this weekend’s first annual Hooked on San Carlos Tournament. Hope to see you there! tight lines, |

San Carlos’ own Captain Wild Bill has headed back north to Alaska. Bill is tendering salmon on the Kodiak and delivering them to Peter Pan Seafoods in Valdez, Alaska. The king crab season starts in October and we will all look forward to Bill’s second season on the Deadliest Catch next year.
Mexico is usually on the short list of locations for newlyweds to celebrate their honeymoons. For Dick and Dianne Newlon, San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico ended up at the top of their list.

Sorry if you missed me last week. I took the opportunity at the spur of the moment to jump on a friend’s boat to Baja. We stayed at Tortuga Island (55 miles out) the first night and San Marcos, near the town of Santa Rosalia, the next. On the way over all seemed quiet except for the whales and dolphin. Then, we started getting bites halfway across. We couldn’t keep the small sails on though and we lost all eight or nine fish that came up on short hookups using both lures and baits. Sometimes they just aren’t swallowing the bait. We did get a nice surprise though with a 35 pound wahoo on the way over. We were whooping and hollering as it came onto the boat. We ate lots of wahoo sushi! The next morning we headed to San Marcos with a couple knockdowns and one nice striped marlin for my friend’s wife. She was hurting, but it was worth the effort! We spent the day at San Marcos snorkeling, picknicking on the beach, and I of course fished. I saw my first elusive golden cabrilla, which is really just their spawning color. There was lots of life over there and the water was a very refreshing 76 degrees F. Off the point in the dinghy I thought I had a nice yellowtail. What I pulled up though was a 25 pound jack crevalle. Still a nice catch, but not good for dinner. On the way back we finally found one small 13 pound dorado. It pained me, but as my friend stated, “We’re not going to keep the last spawning dorado in the whole ocean.” It’s good to release those females no matter what size! Maybe we were rewarded with the two nice bonita that we caught just miles from port in exceptionally warm water for that species.

On August 14 and 15th, you can knock one off the bucket list and skydive in San Carlos.
