Food for Thought

Brain FoodAccording to Wikipedia, Food for Thought refers to: “Anything that provides mental stimulus for thinking”; but did you realize that diet plays an extremely huge role in the health of your brain? It’s true. The human brain is remarkably responsive to the food we eat, and as a result our meals have an enormous influence over our health and brain functions. Missing nutrients, environmental toxins, day-to-day stress, overwork, stimulants and junk food affect our state of health and functioning of our brains. Foods that are bad for the health of your brain are also terrible for your body and they can manifest other health-related problems including obesity, Type-2 diabetes, and heart disease. The path to a better brain is loaded with Omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and fiber. Learn more on how to boost your brain power…

Fishing Report

fishing reportThings are slowly turning around in the San Carlos fishing arena. It has been a year of up and down fishing. We were out mid-week after hearing of a few fish being caught to land five out of ten fish at the Island. The reports on Friday were not great, though they turned on in the afternoon. We went out the next day and the fishing was full-on in the morning. It was glass calm that Saturday and we even caught two out of four fish halfway out to the Island. We reached the Island and the birds and fish were everywhere. We quickly caught up with our catch with multiple doubles of big fish until the fish box was bulging. It was great to see close to thirty boats out at the Island alone, with probably another dozen or so bottom fishing. The captains and guys on shore are finally getting some work. Let’s hope the good fishing, nice weather, and you o’ so brave and “stupid” people risking the extreme violence of Mexico stick around for a few more months. You’re in Mexico, who cares about paying your taxes? You probably pay them online anyhow.

The water is still below 60 degrees in places, but is warming up on the nice days at least on the surface. Winds are abating a bit. The clear cold water is showing some signs of green nutrient-rich water. There are not too many signs of the water ‘turning-over’ yet, but the anchovies are starting to hatch and there is a lot of bait out there. The yellowtail should be fattening up for the Spring spawn. I can see on the charts that the striped marlin are hovering around Cabo and the dorado may be up to a hundred miles away from there. It will be a slow warm-up, but anything is better that the frigid winter we’ve had.

Castaway Kids complete “Penny Wars” house

castaway kidsThe Castaway Kids’ Construction Crew complete “Penny Wars” house in Las Playitas area.

The first project under Castaway Kids’ program, Adopt a family– Build a Home, was recently completed in Las Playitas area of Guaymas and a little celebration was held there with the family. The funds for this project were donated by a Spanish Club in a Chandler, AZ school from their Penny Wars fundraiser, with some matching funds from Castaway Kids. Thanks to construction volunteers, Dave Keilholtz, Larry Kalmbach, Doug Porlier, Paul Nichols and Bob Doiel, (and a few others I’m sure I’m missing) for working with Omar, the father of the family, to complete this project. For more information about this and other Castaway Kids projects and upcoming events, check us out at castawaykidsmx.org, or come to our next meeting on Saturday March 12 at La Palapa Griega, at 10:00am.

PS: Be sure to watch for new Castaway Kids window stickers at an establishment near you.
