Guaymas Bay Holiday Cruise

Ocean Camp presents a special Guaymas Bay Holiday Cruise for members and their friends. A two-hour tour of Guaymas Bay with great views, tasty treats, beverages, and music — just in time for the holidays.
We start with a walking tour of the historic district to see the holiday decorations in the town center. We’ll enjoy watching people walking along the Malecon, and a special treat: ice skaters skating. No, we are not kidding.
You may have toured around San Carlos and San Francisco Bay, right? But have you seen beautiful downtown Guaymas from the ocean?
We will cruise the bay along Guaymas’ Malecon with its Christmas lights, dancing fountains and families enjoying their new waterfront. We will glide around the islands and learn their history, watch the sunset, and explain “what’s up” in the night sky just before the Geminids Meteor Shower and the moon’s full eclipse later on in December.
The tour price includes your choice of refreshments such as wine, cerveza, soft drinks, plus an assortment of sushi, cheese, chips and salsa. Price does not include jackets and mittens, so please bring your own because it is going to be chilly after the sun goes down.
We will provide transportation to and from San Carlos so you don’t have to drive back from Guaymas at night. We depart at 3:00pm, on Sunday, December 12. The price is 550 pesos per-person (that’s around $44USD), children under 12 pay half price but must be accompanied by an adult. Reserve your place now by calling (044) 622-126-9622, or send an email to oceancamp@me.com (please put “Guaymas Bay Tour” in the subject line.)
Limited seating available, so reserve now for this Ocean Camp designed tour.
See you on board.
Regards,
Mark & Miguel |
Virgin of Guadalupe
December 12 is the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico’s patron saint. It is an official national holiday, and is observed with pilgrimages, special masses, fiestas and feasts.
The vigil is the night before, on December 11, in churches around Guaymas. The biggest celebration will be in Santuario de Guadalupe Church on Blvd. Plaza las Villas (turn right off Garcia Lopez after Ley. Click here for map). There are masses at 8:00pm and 10:00pm and mariachi at midnight for las mañanitas (birthday song) to the Virgin of Guadalupe. There will be traditional food and drink at the fiesta.
On December 11 in San Carlos, there will be a Pilgrimage (parade with young ladies dressed up as the Virgin Mary and angels) from Santa Rosa to the Church of San Carlos Borromeo (map to Church) at 5:00pm followed by a Mass at 6:00pm.
In case you can’t stay up until midnight, you can watch a previous las mañanitas here. |
San Carlos All-Stars Concert
Number 21 is the name of the new CD put out by Mexmo, a local recording studio featuring hits by our local musicians. Mexmo has released 20 CD’s in the past 5 years.
San Carlos All-Stars will perform the second Wednesday of every month until April. The upcoming CD really hits home how musically rich our little village is. There are 13 songs but it still doesn’t have everybody. A Volume 2 with the duet of Steve Smersh/Elba Santiago, pianoman-Omar, Danny, Susan, Azul and the Luna Band will make the compilation complete.
The concert series was conceived as a way to create jobs, keep live music alive in San Carlos and benefit the orphanage, Rancho Del Ninos, who will receive 100% of the proceeds from the CD sales at the concerts. We hope that folks will come and enjoy an awesome variety show including this month’s line-up of the Twins, Ron Daisly, Peter Pope Jones, Bobby and Leslie and a surprise guest. The 100 pesos ticket buys a “2 for 1 drink,” a chance for a door prize worth double the ticket price, and the opportunity to show support for San Carlos entertainment. There will be a donation box at the door to encourage folks to bring along canned goods, toys, clothing, etc.
Where: Hotel Fiesta Real (map).
When: Wednesday, December 8, starting at 6:00pm.
Price: 100 pesos. Tickets are available now at Hotel Fiesta Real, Long Realty Seaside, Barracuda Bob’s, Evie’s Simply Coffee, San Carlos Marketing (in Los Jitos) and online at www.mexmosancarlos.com. |

Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating
The holidays are here and with their arrival comes a virtual onslaught of sugary and high-calorie temptations. For many people holidays and family get togethers are a time for celebration; and yes, for food. Rounding the bend into Christmas, it can feel like the very air is filled with sugar. It’s very easy for normal eating patterns to take a backseat at this time of year, but with a few minor changes, special occasion foods can be both delicious and nutritious. Read more …

Fishing Report
We are into yellowtail season, even if there aren’t too many boats fishing for them. The bite has been off and on and the winds have been up a bit, as is typical for winter. Most days you can get to San Pedro Island early in the morning and come back with the wind when it comes up. The bite hasn’t been ‘hot’, but some good catches are being found. The fish are up some days in the morning off of San Antonio and Doble. The fishing around the high tide, or just after the low tide, are usually the best. Yellowtail are a school fish, so sometimes you just need to find the bunch. A good fishfinder helps, and if the readings are deep and the fish aren’t biting the lures, you may have to jig.
We had some luck mid-week on the north-east end of the Island just off the north tip. There were a lot of small to medium-sized fish around, with some big ones mixed in. There are still some bonita in the area, with a few sierra in close. We weren’t able to find any cabrilla this last week, but they could still be around. The tides look a little better for possibly finding fish on the surface or higher in the water column this week. Get out there early, or on a calm day, put in the time, watch your fishfinder, and if all else fails, jig and just enjoy the fact that your friends up north don’t even have liquid water and the temperatures are still 50-100 degrees warmer here!
