According to Wikipedia, a New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. Instead of making a resolution to lose weight, why not make one to become healthier, eat right and stay fit, and you may likely succeed. Then the goal shifts, and basically you are setting yourself up to live a longer, healthier, and…Read more

Fishing Report
Things were looking a little slow for the holiday weekend, but all that changed … and then it changed again …. and again. That’s yellowtail fishing for you. At one time and location there is nothing around, and then the whole sea erupts.
The week before the fishing was pretty good for a mixed bag of various sized yellowtail at the Island. A few of the last marlin were seen, but none caught. I was out one last afternoon for a couple hours to watch one large one quickly heading south. I will miss them.
Off of San Antonio things were generally slow, except for one two hour period that I heard of and some friends who caught some bottomfishing. Most of the fish were still in the 7-12# range. The Island bite slowly died down, but the fish at least were then all big.
We were out Christmas morning shortly to catch maybe the only fish off of San Antonio. One thing you can count on after a few days of wind, is usually some good fishing. We hit the Island and found ourselves to be not the only boat around. Action looked pretty slow, and those that were caught were providing the sea lions some very nice breakfast treats. We lost our first two to the rocks trolling, but then picked up two very large yellowtail. Things started to die down, and as we began to change locations, I notice the birds.
Thousands of birds were up on the north end of the Island. As we got to the north end, birds by the thousands began working the south end and the entire length of the east side. The bait was up and the fish were feeding. There were a lot of barracuda to weed through in close, but we were able to catch another nine yellowtail to fill the cooler. Seven of the fish that day were above 20#, with many of them in the 25-28# range. I have never caught such a large ‘averaged-sized catch’. Then yesterday they were gone, and the boat only caught one yellowtail and one snapper.
Don’t despair though. My friends who had old gas in their tank had to stay in close. They ended up catching three large fish right out of the harbor! My father wasn’t seeing things as they had claimed they saw a yellowtail boil from Pilar the day before. There were also reports of fish caught at San Antonio midday. We were out in the afternoon trolling right around in the middle of the bay where a huge finback whale was feeding along with some lazy pelicans in some dirty water. All of a sudden, line started screaming off the reel in a steady and relentless pull. I thought for sure that we had snagged the whale, but my father-in-law started to gain line and the creature materialized into a nice fat yellowtail. Two years ago we had some large yellowtail stick around the bay all season, so lets hope some of these fish decide to stay. It would be much easier on my gas bill! The last I heard they had one “in the box” this morning before the midday bite. We’ll be busy fishing this week!
