Castaway Kids at the Christmas Bazaar
Castaway Kids host “Crafty Ladies” from Tipton Educational Center in Guaymas at upcoming Rescate Christmas Bazaar this Saturday on the Malecon.
Castaway Kids volunteers completed this community center in Las Playitas area of Guaymas, then dedicated it as Tipton Educational Center in memory of Steve Tipton. More of our volunteers have worked with the ladies in the area, supplying them with materials and a place to work and learn new skills. This is all a part of our program to help families put food on the table and keep their kids in school. We are paying for a spot at the Christmas Bazaar this Saturday for the ladies to display the items they have made over the summer. They get to keep all the proceeds from their work. There will also be other hand-made items from members and their families on sale, and proceeds from these will go to the student sponsorship program. We hope the community will come and buy some of these hand-made items. They will make great holiday gifts! We’ll have members there to answer any questions about Castaway Kids and our student sponsorship program, Adelante Estudiante. Thanks to Judy Peek and Rescate for hosting this bazaar. It`s a great way to kick off the holiday season.

San Carlos Weather & News Bites

- The forecast is for more sunny, warm, breezy days and cool nights. Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page (now with wind and wave forecasts).
- Explosions and Fire in San Carlos. A fire started in Gary’s Dive Shop early Monday morning and the fire made a few of their SCBA tanks explode. Fortunately only a few tanks were damaged and will need to be taken out of service. The other tanks will be re-hydro tested and certified. The majority of the equipment was not damaged. The wetsuits which where laid out to dry got a little toasty. The San Carlos Fire Department did a fantastic job in putting out the fire. We were told by several people that the fire was so big that they could see the flames coming out of the building and that these could be seen from over a mile away. One of the many things that burned were the decorations for the Haunted House which Gary and Donna have held for many years during Halloween in San Carlos. Fortunately Donna still has some boxes in her US home. Donna and Gary seem very optimistic since most of the damage was smoke damage. The good news is, all of the boats are in the water, fully geared and ready for business. If you’d like to help Gary and Donna get back on their feet, book one of their many excellent boat tours and get out and see the dolphins and sealions in the waters around San Carlos. See more photos.

Dive Report
This week we had nice calm mornings and some wind later in the day. That is normal for this time of the year and there is lots of time to make it back to the dock before the wind picks up or you can enjoy the sail back while the sun sets. This screen saver picture shows the moon behind Tetakawi, a nice finish to a beautiful day. Experiencing this kind of natural beauty is one huge benefit to coming back a little later, or in taking a sunset cruise.
The water temperature was 68 degrees F on shallow dives, 63 degrees at 80 feet and 58 degrees below 100 feet. Visibility varied but was much better than the week before. At the Island, it opened up as you went deeper and locally it seemed that you had to go out the coves and peek around the corners. There were some whale sightings and a very large pod of dolphins joined us.
Come and join us down here. It’s a beautiful time of the year.

Fishing Report
It was a very varied week of fishing in San Carlos. Of course I ‘ate my words’ the day after my last report. The bonita came back in and the inshore fishing was excellent. The yellowtail are hot one day and not the next. We missed the early bonita bite and were only able to painfully jig up one of two yellowtail. We changed tactics though and began catching cabrilla and sierra. We picked up three large cabrilla along the coast. We got out of the wind around Honeymoon Island and started catching very large 8-9 pound sierra mackerel. We lost a large cabrilla to the rocks and then pulled in a monster close to 16 pounds. Included in our catch were two corvina, a bonita, skipjack, and yellowtail snapper. We were eating very well that night! The restaurant La Esquina in Las Palmas Plaza behind the OXXO cooked our fish, starting off with fish tartar and two incredible styles for the main course. Give them a try!
The next day we headed out for maybe our last chance at dorado. We started before sunrise and got back in the dark. We cruised downswell for hours only seeing one marlin. At 28 miles out, the temperature slowly crept up until at 35 miles, we were in 72 degree water. There were whales and dolphin everywhere, but no dorado. We did pass one marlin which gave us an incredible aeriel display after a difficult take. It fought hard and came in exhausted, but we were able to revive it and send him back on his way south. We had one other short hookup and I thought the season was over. When I’d just about given up hope, I heard a short rip of the drag. I looked back five minutes before sunset to see a large tail crossing the prop wash. I ran down and dropped back a bait behind the next lure, the fish found it and the fight was on. The last marlin of the year at sunset!
Fishing got a little slow this past weekend, but we were able to find a few cabrilla, bonita, skipjack, sierra, and snapper (one was about 9 pounds). We made it to the Island on Monday before our ‘big winds’ this week. The bonita and yellowtail were up in close, but we wanted to try the Island. And it was worth the trip! We ‘filled the box’ with eight bonita, three small yellowtail, and three between 18-27 pounds. I bet my charter can barely lift their arms today!
