San Carlos Triathlon
October 16, 2010. Participants will complete “sprint distances” of a 750-meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and 5 kilometer run. Starting from the white sand beach at Playa Posada, swimmers will plunge into 80 degree water for an exciting swim through the Sea of Cortez. The bike leg takes participants along the Bahia toward Catch 22 Beach, then up to El Mirador, where the short, steep grade presents the most arduous challenge of the day. The reward is a gorgeous view of the rugged coastline, where the reddish mountains of the desert plunge into the deep blue sea. After riding back to Playa Posada, triathletes run along the main street of San Carlos, past shops and businesses and groups of cheering spectators. Male and female categories are divided into under-40 and over-40, and relay teams are also encouraged to participate. Prizes are offered for the top three in each category, however the focus is on fun. A grand fiesta is planned for the finish line. The registration fee is only $300 pesos ($24 USD) and all proceeds benefit the Lions Club of Guaymas, a volunteer organization committed to helping children with physical and mental challenges enjoy life through outdoor and experiential activities. Mexican Crafts in San Carlos
The first thing you will notice about this store is the enchanting architecture. Originally built as a private residence for architect Herman Robledo and his new bride, owner Terry Gonzales eventually converted this space into the shop that now houses the many treasures she seeks out in the far reaches of Mexico. Terry found her way to San Carlos after moving from Los Angeles with her husband and three young children back in the mid-60’s. Her husband was under contract for a one-year project working for a developer with plans for a hotel at the San Carlos Marina. That project went by the wayside, however this was the start of a very prolific era for the young couple. Their first project was building the Fiesta Hotel in 1973, which is still an oceanside favorite today. Construction on their next project, Triana condominiums, began in 1974 next door to the Fiesta property. They wrapped up their construction endeavors with the Pilar Condominiums, which edge the Sea of Cortez halfway between San Carlos and Guaymas. During construction of Triana, Terry opened her first gift shop on the project site. From friendships she had in Lake Chapala, she learned the ropes of seeking out the creative and fun Mexican crafts that fill her store. The next time you are in need of a gift, souvenir, or something for yourself, be sure and stop by and see Terry and her daughter Pilar. There is no doubt that with the assortment of pewter, glassware, ceramics, clothing, and jewelry, you will find just what you are looking for! by Janey McLean |

Where are the Fish?
Not very many boats have headed out, and things seem pretty slow now after the weekend. We got out a couple of times early in the week to find a good number of sailfish, though the bite was a little finicky at times with a lot of fish dropping the baits or getting off halfway in. We did have four on at one time though (landing two)! There are a good number of small marlin, though I’ve yet to see or hear of any big ones. They should show up soon. Good numbers of dorado out there in some respects. We caught four the first day, missing a lot of smaller ones. My captain and a few others found some big dorado in close. Just off of Doble Point outside the harbor, my captain had a 35 pound dorado up to the boat seven times before it broke off. He caught a 22 pound fish a few days earlier and a 16 pound dorado that day. He lost another unidentified big one and the other boats lost a few more in the 16 pound range. All of these were caught on little short-bay cruises fishing for the sierra and skipjack. There have been a number of the small ‘peanut’ dorado in close, but I guess a few of their larger friends are around. One nice thresher shark was caught while bottomfishing and I did hear of one tuna caught. Many boats are catching a few billfish and dorado a day. Just bring some cool drinks, a big hat, and a few shirts to change out of. Hopefully the good fishing will continue until everyone returns for this year’s Labor Day Tournament! tight lines, |

When you are visiting San Carlos, Sonora, there is no doubt that you will find your way to Sagitario, a unique and colorful store full of Mexican crafts, glassware, and clothing.
Good fishing in San Carlos if you can take the heat. It hasn’t been too bad though with some overcast skies and cool breezes. It seems the fishing picks up after a good rain too. If you’re scared to get outside of the A/C and break a sweat, then you’re missing out.
