Dr. Isaiah Ross “The Harmonica Boss”A Short History of One Man Blues Bands and “The Last Concert” ~ Dr. Isaiah Ross ~ “The Harmonica Boss” On Monday, April 11 at 7:00pm, at the San Carlos Yacht Club, David Boyd will present a short history of one man blues bands, and show an 87 minute, Award winning musical performance by the last, great, one man blues band, Dr. Isaiah Ross. Isaiah Ross was born in Tunica, Mississippi in 1925, and he started playing the harmonica at age 5. By age 16 he had learned to play guitar, during a stint in the U.S. Army, in Korea, he added a bass drum and cymbals to his act. He claimed it was easier than trying to keep teaching new drummers his songs. In the early 50’s he was recording for Sam Phillip’s “Sun Records” in Memphis, and he moved to Flint, Michigan in 1954 and started working for General Motors, while continuing his musical career. He toured Europe in 1965 with American Folk Blues Festival, (with Buddy Guy, Big Momma Thornton, and others), and in 1981 received a Grammy Award for “Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording”. For more information visit this website. David Boyd is a San Carlos resident, a member of the Blues Foundation, an amateur ethnomusicologist, and he hosted a weekly, public radio blues Program at WFBE in Flint, Michigan, and had met Ross in the late 60’s and semi-managed Ross until the musician’s death in 1993. “The Last Concert” was filmed professionally by Comcast, and after Ross’ death, the Ross family and Comcast transferred all rights of the performance to endow a scholarship fund in Ross’ name at Mott Community College. The doors open at 6:30pm and all proceeds from the 50 pesos donation at the door and all DVD sales will be added to the Castaway Kids`scholarship fund. |

Help Castaway Kids & Local Food Kitchens
Lots of snowbirds are heading back to their northern homes. Don’t forget to share your leftover food with those in need. There are food bins at Long Realty-Seaside, REMAX (in Plaza Aricifes), at Mi Casa Su Casa Realty in Las Palmas Plaza and at the Energy Zone next to Barracuda Bob’s just waiting for your donations of non-perishable food items. Castaway Kids will see that they are delivered to local food kitchens in Guaymas. Castaway Kids supporters, Judy and Tito from Centro Cristiano del Camino, will even come and clean out your refrigerator, your cupboards or your freezer for you. They have a ministry that helps drug and alcohol addicted and homeless people in Guaymas (at the old Railroad station) and they feed them on Saturday mornings. You can contact them by calling 222-1045 or e-mail titoandjudy@hotmail.com. If you have other items of clothing or bedding, small appliances, etc., you can take them to Bahia Storage during office hours and have Paulo put them in Castaway Kids’ bodega to help those in need or to sell at the next tianguis.

Fishing Report
The boats have been doing pretty good catching some nice calico bass. You have to drop down over a couple of hundred feet to most of the better areas. The grouper are starting to enter shallower water, but they may not be biting either. Maybe we´ll see some Sierra Mackerel soon. As far as offshore, the wind is back up a bit and it still may be a week or two. My gear is ready though and I´m checking the temperature charts several times daily. I’ll be looking to close deals and get to the lake this week. My friends caught over 100 bass a few days ago at Oviache near Obregon. I’m ready to go for a swim! tight lines, Bryan Replogle repsilon@aol.com Team Margarita Sportfishing, San Carlos Aquatic Adventures |

It is sure warming up in San Carlos. Water temperatues were in the low 70´s over the weekend. I heard rumors of a small dorado caught and I’m pretty sure I saw a marlin jumping. We were at the Island on Friday on a nice glass-calm day. Schools of yellowtail started hitting the surface on the north end. We found other schools on the west side but couldn´t get them to bite. I kept watching birds flying off into the distance. I could then see a few miles away a few birds and the surface disturbed. We ran out to what we thought were dolphin, but had then disappeared. The water was up to 72 degrees and I was thinking that they could have been tuna. We then saw a large school of yellowtail. They kept coming up, but these fish wouldn´t bite either. I only had one on briefly that hit a small jig. Although I had caught some nice fish a few days earlier, it seems like they are mainly focusing on large schools of very small anchovies and more immediately entranced in the spring spawn. On the way in, we found schools of several hundred medium-sized yellowtail that were acting the same way. Eventually, they all enter the shallows to lay their eggs on the seaweed and rocks. Then they will start biting again!
CineClub Guaymas presents the free movie “La Vida es Bella” (Life is Beautiful) on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00pm in Guaymas’ Municipal Auditorium (
Last year, the Lions Club of Guaymas started an annual boat rally to raise funds for the people who lost everything to Hurricane Jimena and for the orphanage in Kino Bay. Both the Lions Club and Sonora officials provided a first-class fiesta and meal in Kino Bay (see picture to left). This year’s boat rally will start at Puerto Escondido after Loreto Fest on May 2 with stops to explore San Juanico, Punta Domingo, Bahia Concepcion, Punta Chivato, and other points, arriving for a fiesta in Santa Rosalia on May 6. After the return to San Carlos, there will be a celebration party on May 8, and there will be draws for gifts donated from various sponsors and local businesses. Members of the Mexican Navy will escort the fleet for the entire trip.
