King, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Solomon Burke, Keb’ Mo’, Macy Gray, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray, and John Fogerty, to name but a few) performing at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in February, 2003. Motor / Sailboat Charity Rally

Last year, the Lions Club of Guaymas started an annual boat rally to raise funds for the people who lost everything to Hurricane Jimena and for the orphanage in Kino Bay. This year’s boat rally will start at Puerto Escondido after Loreto Fest on May 2 with stops to explore San Juanico, Punta Domingo, Bahia Concepcion, Punta Chivato, and other points, arriving for a fiesta in Santa Rosalia on May 6. After the return to San Carlos, there will be a celebration party on May 8, and there will be draws for gifts donated from various sponsors and local businesses. Members of the Mexican Navy will escort the fleet for the entire trip.

The registration fee is $75 US, which includes a t-shirt and hat for every participant in the rally. Funds from the second annual boat rally will be donated to charities for disabled children.

Celebrate Spring with Asparagus

asparagusby Kristina Ladau

Asparagus is one of the most nutritionally well-balanced vegetables in existence. It leads nearly all produce items in the wide array of nutrients it supplies, in significant amounts, for a healthy diet. Asparagus is quite frankly one of nature’s most nutritious and perfect foods.

I always think of asparagus around Easter. Like clockwork those sexy, slender stalks appear; crisp and fresh, and so inviting. Buying it fresh, in springtime, it is particularly nutritious. Besides being extremely versatile and uniquely delicious, check out the nutrition and health benefits of asparagus. Read more.

Fishing Report

fishingWe had a busy Semana Santa week, but not that many people were here to go fishing. We were able to catch some nice cabrilla and pargo on a few trips in the bay. One big fat female cabrilla weighed almost 15 pounds. I’m sure the two fishermen in the little panga next to us told half the beach about the silly gringos who let it go back in the water. But the fish was full of eggs, so we let her go. Our group and another set of friends both picked up some single medium-sized yellowtail just down from Tetakawi. I only heard of one big fish caught at the Island, but the bite should start to pick back up soon. Inshore the small Sierra are starting to show up. One of our boats caught several bonita and lost a large cabrilla to the rocks. More pargo are showing up too, with many 4 – 6 pound yellowtailed pargo. A few small dorado are also showing up, with reports of the billfish not too far away. We should start getting some actual confirmations any day now, and I’ll be giving it my first shot on Thursday.

I finally got to take my swim at Lake Oviache in Obregon. The first swim wasn’t by choice though, as the fish pulled my rod into the water. Thankfully I was able to retrieve the rod and catch the fish! I had a great time with my brother-in-law and he caught the biggest 4 pound tilapia that I have ever seen. I think I caught my first double hookup on one lure as the fish grabbed each hook. There were lots of blooming palo verdes and mesquite trees out in the desert. As we got into the car to leave, the temperature was reading 96 degrees. Summer is here!
