Semana Santa
The Mayor of Guaymas, César Lizárraga Hernández, declared Guaymas and San Carlos ready to welcome 300,000 visitors to the area during Semana Santa (April 18 – April 24). The Department of Public Services has been busy cleaning beaches, parks and streets in preparation for the influx of vacationers.
For some people, it is time to spend in church, but many Mexicans will also take advantage of the holiday to go on vacation. And for their vacation, half of Mexico flocks to the beaches looking to play in the surf, camp on the beach, spend time with family and friends and to dance, drink and have a fiesta. Read more and see more photos from last year.

Concert Film Fest
Festival Express is a rousing record of a little-known, but monumental, moment in rock n’ roll history, starring such music legends as Janis Joplin, The Band, and the Grateful Dead. Set in 1970, Festival Express was a multi-band, multi-day extravaganza that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation and a nation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lived, slept, rehearsed and did countless unmentionable things aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Calgary, to Winnipeg, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience, both off-stage and on, was filmed but the extensive footage remained locked away — until now. A momentous achievement in rock film archeology, Festival Express combines this long-lost material with contemporary interviews nearly 35 years after it was first filmed. Watch a preview. A 30 pesos donation will be accepted for the Castaway Kids ongoing programs. The Sunday Concert Film Fest will be held weekly at the Captain’s Club, starting at sundown. |

Delfinario Sonora Giving Back to Community
Over 80 excited and smiling students from the Adelante Estudiante scholarship program arrived at the Delfinario Sonora last Saturday. Mil gracias to Lorenzo DeCima from the State Financial Office in Guaymas who provided the buses, as well as the tables and chairs for our lunch. Anxious sponsors and many volunteers awaited their arrival in anticipation of a fabulous afternoon provided by the Delfinario, now a part of the State agency CEDES. After a tasty snack of burritos, which was underwritten by a generous San Carlos donor, we all gathered to listen to an educational program by Marisol Guerrero Martinez about the local environment and sea life. We moved on to the sea lions who danced, clapped, jumped and entertained us all with their antics. Then the dolphins leapt in joy, danced on their tails, waved and left us with the perfect end to a great afternoon. The following day, nine lucky students and a couple of volunteers had the opportunity to spend time in the water with the dolphins. This wrapped up an unforgettable experience for all who attended. Sponsors and students had the chance to get to know each other better, and all the students greatly appreciated this opportunity. Many of these students would not be attending secondary, high school or even college without the generosity of sponsors who pay for tuition, uniforms, shoes and school supplies. They also offer the incredible gift of hope so that these young people can continue with their education and make the most of themselves. I LOVE being a part of Adelante Estudiante/Castaway Kids! The many volunteers of this organization are a group of “doers” not complainers and truly make a difference in many lives in this beautiful area that we are privileged to be in. |

Little known history of the Yaqui
In 1910, John Kenneth Turner wrote the book Barbarous Mexico. Many Americans originally viewed this as a hit piece on the Diaz regime but it played an important role in the Mexican Revolution. Turner’s biography shows an interesting life. Turner has been almost forgotten in his home country. Having backed the appropriate winds of change south of the Rio Grande, he is more favorably remembered in Mexico. The book reveals that the Yaqui people were famed for being hard-working and strong. And tells how, between 1904 and 1909, around 15,000 Yaquis were rounded up, forced along the tortuous route to Yucatán and enslaved. Despite their extraordinary strength, most of them died within the first year on the plantations, raising questions of whether they were the victims of genocide. The Yaquis were put on boats at Guaymas and shipped to San Blas, where they were forced to walk over 300 kilometers to San Marcos. Here were large concentration camps where the Yaqui families were broken up. Individuals were then sold inside the station and packed into train cars which took them to Veracruz. Another boat ride brought them to Progreso in Yucatán, from which they were taken to the plantation which would be their tomb. Barbarous Mexico provides an interesting look at a portion of Guaymas’ history. Read the book for free online. |

Fishing Report
For the good news, the water is warming fast and the dorado and marlin may be just days away. The extended forecast looks good. The water had cooled back down to 58 with the winds, but it is warming fast and is currently in the upper 60′s, if not already in the 70′s along the shorelines. I’m ready to catch anything at this point, and I want some fresh fish on the table. My patience has worn thin and I’ll be fishing as soon as the mayhem subsides. tight lines, Bryan Replogle repsilon@aol.com Team Margarita Sportfishing, San Carlos Aquatic Adventures |

Ocean Camp San Carlos
Also, we want to share with you that last week we completed another successful visit of thirty-some bright students and their teachers from Hermosillo, who came to San Carlos for a three-day Ocean Camp. Thanks to our members that volunteered their time to accompany our students in some of the activities we had scheduled for them. Teachers and students were very happy to meet all of you. This was a special “Ocean Camp” as another phase of this project was introduced: Desert Camp, a place where students and interested individuals can visit and stay to learn about this fragile ecosystem and what we can do to preserve it. Our students had the opportunity to set foot in the different camping areas, and listened about what living in Desert Camp would be like. Stay tuned! Desert Camp is coming to a desert near you. Best Regards, Ocean Camp San Carlos / Desert Camp San Carlos |

The San Carlos Community Church and Parroquia de San Carlos Borromeo are holding the following special Easter services:
During Semana Santa (April 18 – 23), there will be paintball in San Carlos at “Glorieta Country Club” (the empty land where the country club towers would have been — across from Los Jitos).
Meet Sol. Sol is one of the few male puppies currently at San Carlos Canine Refuge, with longish golden brown fur and a bright, intelligent face that shows possibly some shepherd in his heritage. He gets along well with other dogs and likes both adults and children. He was found wandering along Algodones Beach about two months ago, very sick with tick fever, but now at six months old he has completely recovered. He would be happiest as an outside dog, with a fenced yard to play in, but he does walk well on a leash. Sol is due for a bit more medical attention, but he will be neutered before adoption, and a donation of 300 pesos is requested to cover that fee. Please call the Refuge at 622-226-0926 if there’s a place for Sol in your heart and your home.

The town is getting ready for the big party. Most of the boats this weekend will just be cruising around blaring music. I haven’t heard of anyone going to the Island. The full moon should be waning and hopefully some reports will start to come in. Earlier in the week we saw multiple schools of hundreds of yellowtail. They were slurping up tiny anchovies. On Saturday we finally caught one, but that was it. We didn’t see as many fish up that day. The ocean is full of these little anchovies. We caught a couple of yellowtailed red snapper (Coco Naco), a lizardfish (Chile), and a few barracudas. One report of bottomfishing at the Island sounded pretty poor.

This week is Semana Santa (Easter Week), and as you probably know, San Carlos receives thousands of visitors that come to enjoy this resort town. We think it is best to NOT have a Dinner and Movie this coming Wednesday, April 20. Stay tuned for upcoming dates, and thanks for your support in the last movie events.
