According to Wikipedia, a New Year’s resolution is a commitment that
an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle
change that is generally interpreted as advantageous.

Instead of making a resolution to lose weight, why not make one to become
healthier, eat right and stay fit, and you may likely succeed. Then the goal
shifts, and basically you are setting yourself up to live a longer, healthier, and
happier life. Such a deal!

Everyday you make choices that influence your body’s health. Each day’s
choices may benefit or harm your health only a little, but when these choices
are repeated over years, the rewards or consequences become major – The most
visible effect being weight problems. Carelessness about food choices can also
contribute to many of today’s most prevalent chronic diseases such as cancer,
heart attach, hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. These are the
killer of society today.

While most people realize that food habits affect their health, they often
choose foods for other reasons. Foods bring to the table a variety of pleasures
and traditions as well as nourishment. People decide what and when to eat in
highly personal ways, often based on behavioral or social motives.

Over the next several weeks we’ll take a look at the Big Three – Protein,
carbohydrates, and fat, and how they work to provide energy to the body,
brain, and muscles.

Until then, have a most Happy New Year!
