It is sure warming up in San Carlos. Water temperatues were in the low 70´s over the weekend. I heard rumors of a small dorado caught and I’m pretty sure I saw a marlin jumping. We were at the Island on Friday on a nice glass-calm day. Schools of yellowtail started hitting the surface on the north end. We found other schools on the west side but couldn´t get them to bite. I kept watching birds flying off into the distance. I could then see a few miles away a few birds and the surface disturbed. We ran out to what we thought were dolphin, but had then disappeared. The water was up to 72 degrees and I was thinking that they could have been tuna. We then saw a large school of yellowtail. They kept coming up, but these fish wouldn´t bite either. I only had one on briefly that hit a small jig. Although I had caught some nice fish a few days earlier, it seems like they are mainly focusing on large schools of very small anchovies and more immediately entranced in the spring spawn. On the way in, we found schools of several hundred medium-sized yellowtail that were acting the same way. Eventually, they all enter the shallows to lay their eggs on the seaweed and rocks. Then they will start biting again!
The boats have been doing pretty good catching some nice calico bass. You have to drop down over a couple of hundred feet to most of the better areas. The grouper are starting to enter shallower water, but they may not be biting either. Maybe we´ll see some Sierra Mackerel soon. As far as offshore, the wind is back up a bit and it still may be a week or two. My gear is ready though and I´m checking the temperature charts several times daily. I’ll be looking to close deals and get to the lake this week. My friends caught over 100 bass a few days ago at Oviache near Obregon. I’m ready to go for a swim!
