Fishing has still been off and on, but in general things are getting better. We were out last Friday for a couple of hours during which we were bringing in 8-12 pound fish until they were jumping out of the box. The next day, the bite only lasted an hour and the fish were smaller. The next day … nothing. Then things picked back up and we have done very well the last couple of days. Today they were smaller, but some fish are still up to 12 pounds. We definitely caught our share compared to others. There are lots of fish hitting the surface, but they don’t stay up for long. The fish have been up early and have been biting better earlier in the morning.
Reports from the Island have been slim and most have only caught a fish or two at best. The bottomfishing reports also haven’t been that great. The water is a lot clearer now with lots of bait out there. Offshore the water is still 61-63 degrees F, but there is warmer water to the south. If the winds stay down we may see the marlin and dorado showing up in a month. I’m ready for a change, but until then look for continued action in close and the big ones to begin biting at the Island. Sorry that I missed last week’s report, but my head was still in a daze from catching over 100 largemouth bass just myself at the lake. I’m ready to head back and take my first swim of the year. Bring on the warmth!
