Explosions and Fire in San Carlos yesterday morning, a top priority for San Carlos Fire Department at Gary’s Dive shop.
A fire started in Gary’s Dive Shop early Monday morning and the fire made a few of their SCBA tanks explode. Fortunately only a few tanks were damaged and will need to be taken out of service. The other tanks will be re-hydro tested and certified. The majority of the equipment was not damaged. The wetsuits which where laid out to dry got a little toasty.
Some of you probably heard this loud explosion early in the morning, around 5:00am-6:00am. The San Carlos Fire Department did a fantastic job in putting out the fire. We were told by several people that the fire was so big that they could see the flames coming out of the building and that these could be seen from over a mile away. This was probably one of the biggest structural fires that San Carlos has had to endure.
The fire burned behind their office, but between their refill station. One of the many things that burned were the decorations for the Haunted House which Gary and Donna have held for many years during Halloween in San Carlos. Fortunately Donna still has some boxes in her US home.
Donna and Gary seem very optimistic since most of the damage was smoke damage. They were cleaning up most of the fire remains when we visited them yesterday. Next for them is to re-paint the shop and give it that new look once again. We can’t wait to see how it turns out.
The good news is, all of the boats are in the water, fully geared and ready for business. If you’d like to help Gary and Donna get back on their feet, book one of their many excellent boat tours and get out and see the dolphins and sealions in the waters around San Carlos.
