Castaway Kids’ sponsored students get backpacks for start of school.
A Message from Terry Lynn Challis, President, Castaway Kids
Even though the majority of Castaway Kids‘ volunteers as well as student sponsors are in their summer places right now, it doesn’t mean no work is going on. Thanks to our Adelante Estudiante Backpack Committee, headed by Lauri Cooney, 80 backpacks have been filled with school supplies so that our sponsored students can start school with everything they’ll need to do well this year. Tammi Miller, Orlando Rendon and Georgina Bedran have been busy delivering the backpacks to the schools for distribution to the students.
Sponsored students were also given vouchers so they might obtain school and sports uniforms and their tuitions have been paid from their sponsors’ accounts. It has been a big project to put together an organizational “tree” to see this is done for our now 90 sponsored students, and of course, we are still looking for ways to streamline the process. We are also looking for anyone who’d like to be involved in this organizational, behind the scenes work. If you have any interest in pitching in, e-mail me at adelante.estudiante@yahoo.com and tell me what skill set you might bring to our group.
Another idea for community involvement: Lots of stores have school supplies on sale right now. We’ll need 500 spiral notebooks, as well as enough pens, markers, colored pencils, scientific calculators, etc. for at least 100 students for next year’s “first day of school”. We will happily accept donated supplies in any quantity this fall when all of us snowbirds start coming back to San Carlos. We’ll also need a new Committee Chair for this committee.
One more thing I’d like to mention– David Irons, Christa Thomas and Pam Brame have been putting in some hours changing our website, www.castawaykidsmx.org to a new domain, making it easier to post updates for Committee Heads and for updating information. Check it out and recommend it to your friends. Also, do us a favor and become a fan on Facebook! Thank you David, Christa & Pam!!
