Fishing Report June 15

fishing sierraA little bit of wind this past week kept us off the water for a few days. We headed out after that but didn’t find too much out there. A few sails and one small marlin that pulled the lure for a few seconds. We did find a lot of sailfish right on the reef on our way back in. Our hookup and catch ratio wasn’t too spectacular though, landing only one. I will be looking to see if they are still there to try to even the score.

Didn’t hear too many reports from the outside. One friend had a great catch of large dorado out in the center. A few large dorado have been caught closer in. I did hear of a couple wahoo that bit through some lines as well as an 80 pound tuna that was caught. I believe that the dorado are concentrated on the other side around the sargasso lines. There is some colder water popping up there too. It is a great time of year to go fish the other side, which we will be doing this coming weekend in our first annual Father’s Day Santa Rosalia crossing. It will be an inexpensive, fun, two-day tournament with an overnight stay in Santa Rosalia. Hopefully we’ll be weighing some fish to eat Sunday at 5:00pm at Marina San Carlos. Please email me if you want to learn more about the tournament/crossing.

My boats have still been catching lots of sierra in the bay and some bottom-fish for ceviche. We found a few sailfish just outside the reef earlier in the week, and another friend found them close to the Island on the reef. There were some good bait readings down deep outside, but it seems that the flying fish are not around right now. Keep your fingers crossed and hope that the currents bring us some fish. For now, I’m breaking out the light tackle and circle hooks for some pez vela!
